google+

Thanks for your input. Facebook it will be then. There I was making myself all those sweet promises and enjoying the rewards only to see all my hopes flushed away and go back to the Dark Side once more. :bawl:

Well, you *can* make public posts on Google+. That means they will always be able to read them, but can only comment if they are logged in G+.

For long posts, Google's layout is incredibly better.

Good timing for this thread. I'm going away on a long term trip soon and I've come to the conclusion that the easiest way to keep in touch and update people at home as well as keep a database of newly-met people will be to get back in the social-network scene (I rather enjoyed my life facebook-free for the past year or two).

So do you techy and socialnetworky and twittery people think I should go with FB or G+ ? I won't do both since I certainly don't want to spend anymore time than I need at the computer. From what I see, G+ would be a better platform but I fear it might not be widespread enough by the time I leave (in a month) and most people won't be there. Thoughts ?

well, even though G+ is considerably more well suited for what you're talking about, it just depends on if a good deal of people pick up on that fact and switch over within the next month or not. however, you can post to "public," which functions like twitter where anyone can read your updates, and invites seem to be staying open for the most part so it's not hard to get people on it... and so far everyone who i've invited seems to prefer it to FB by a good margin. Honestly, it's a big enough upgrade from FB that I can see FB dying in the next year or so unless they make some pretty hefty changes to their interface to keep up.

So, it really just depends on if your friends and family tend to be "early adopters" or if they are sort of computer illiterate. If most of them still use Internet Explorer and play Farmville, I would say go with facebook. If they're the sort of people who use flickr and twitter and have smartphones and such, go with G+.

Page: growth on Google+ has been great, over one billion items shared -- Engadget

Wondering why Google+ ran out of disk space? Looks like it might be a casualty of growth: in today's earnings call, Google CEO Larry Page revealed that since its launch, more than ten million people have joined Google+, sharing some one billion items every day. Those numbers not big enough for you? Then chew on this: that little +1 button? It gets clicked 2.3 billion times per day in its own right. It's still a far cry from the 750 million users actively addicted to Facebook, but still, that's a heck of a start.

I hopped on it as well. So far I like. I think the photostream is way more elegant then FB's.

I like that there is some cross linkage between G+ and sites like Blogger and Flickr.

EDIT: If anyone cares to add,....I'm shamelessly trying to grow my circles.
