Well, now there's a '71 with the egg tuners.
I assume you've checked the neck for a date peabody? Confident the tuners are original to the neck and bass? Definitely a '69 or later logo decal.
Why the refin? Was the original color Oly White?

if the tuners remains the original, with the decal that from '68 to '75, it's not common,man. As you said, mostly it's from '69ish.

As you can see from the attached picture, I refinned a refin. Some people have told me they liked they way it looked before, but I absolutely love the way it turned out. I had the refin done here locally (in La Crosse, WI) at Dave's Guitar Shop.
I have to admit, this is somewhat of a mystery bass. Unfortunately the neck is not dated, and as you said, the logo suggests post '69....and the paddle tuners (according to my Fender book) were only used up to '69 or '70. I thought at one point the paddle tuners were added later (due to the fact a regular flat screw was used to hold the tuner gear on, as opposed to a phillips head), but I took one tuner completely off and it sure sure looks to be original to me.
It came to me with what appeared to be an aftermarket neck plate (no serial number), so I couldn't use a serial number to date it. However, the pickups and pots are clearly marked '71...thus my designating it a '71. According to the previous owner, although the pickguard is not original, it came off an early 80's Fullerton Jazz.
Regardless of it's air of mystery, this bass plays like a dream and the neck is in such good shape, it's like having a brand new '71 Jazz.

Sounds/looks like the one I have. I'm planning on ordering an abalone one for my GL J-Bass, and I was thinking black pearloid for the white fretless j-bass, but I haven't been able to find any good pics of what it'd look like.

I think you were right on with your choice to refinish the bass, especially since the original finish was stripped anyway. Oly White was a great choice too.
I still think those tuners are not original to the bass. The logo is definitely post 1969, and I found another source that says the egg tuners were introduced in mid 1966 and were totally gone by '68. It seems the egg tuners were the first forward turning tuners btw. Customers didn't dig the shape so they went back to the "clover" style.
Whatever the real history of your bass, IMO the playability and sound is where the real value lies. You've got a great, vibey, early 70's J bass that you won't be tempted to sell to a collector because of its "issues" regarding originality.
Black pearl looks good on a white Jazz. But it kind of begs you to keep going just a little farther, until, like me you end up with a white Fender Jazz..with black blocks and binding on a maple neck, almost all black hardware and EMG's.
It's just not very 'Fender' anymore. But dang! it's still cool.
The sunburst fretless Jazz is waaaay more 'Fender' and the only Fender part on it is the neck.
As to an abalone pickguard for the Geddy? It could be very cool. I had one. It was a great bass. I just didn't want to have another black bass around. I already had the Squier Precision Plus or Special or whatever they call the P-body, J-neck,PJ p'upped bass. I'm thinking of fixing it up to be either my daughter's bass or my backup backup backup bass.
If it stays mine, I'll put on a tie-dye gray-black-white [ickguard and a Moses neck. If she'll play it, it'll keep the Squier neck and get a tie-dye [ink and white pickguard.
Alright then. Mine started out looking like Funkalicious's bass. And now it's modified into two basses as above.
Joel, are my eyes deceiving me, or does your bass have pearl NECK BINDING as well?
If so, that's beautiful is it a custom job?

What's with the pickguard continuing down to the control plate and having it and the knobs be plastic? That confuses me.
