Got SRX?

Mine are an SRX400 (top) and an SRX300 (bottom). The SRX400 has a volume and a boost only bass control, like the opposite of a passive tone control. It sounds huge!

I bought the SRX 300 and it was a decent bass for the money. I really liked the SRX 400 I tried. It's too bad Ibanez has discontinued so many of the SRX line, like the original SRX 700. That was a wonderful bass. But I guess if they don't sell in huge quantities it's not worth it for them.

Here in Canada it's tough to find any Ibanez basses except for a couple models. Lots of guitars though. The Canadian Ibanez distributor is extremely lazy and clueless. And forget ever trying to get Ibanez replacement parts in Canada. The SRX line never was in good supply here.

I've tried to contact Ibanez a couple times but they never answer.

But I still own one Ibanez-the discontinued (naturally) Artcore 34" scale semi-hollow model with a single pickup and the tone control that doesn't do anything. Once I get the tone control wired up right with different vaues that match the odd pickup, it should sound amazing. It's not bad as it is. Great bass for Thomastic flat wound strings.

But I sold my SRX 300 so I don't make it into the club.

Since changing pickups (Bartolini MK5) and a Bartolini active 2-band preamp (though the pup 'blend' pot is some
what crackily), my SRX705NT 5 string can get close to the sound of a Jazz if I play on the neck pup, but I don't use that sound . . . I already have an MIA Jazz and a P bass . . . wanted something different sounding. Has a nice growl when on the bridge pup alone.

The neck is wonderful and fast, though I still dislike the 16-inch radius of the fretboard.

The bass weighs 9.0 pounds - the same as my 4 string Jazz.

The chrome has tarnished a tad, but "Never-Dull" brings it back to life.

I picked it up used, in mint condition, for $535.
Added the Bart pups for $210.
Added the active preamp, for $115
Installed D'Addario Chromes (flats) for $30.

So, for a total investment of of $890, I have a GREAT bass!

I keep it in a TSA approved Gator case ($120).

I'm about to spring for a 2010 Fender Jazz V, candy cola with a maple neck, so this one will probably be collecting dust, or I'll sell it. The Jazz V has a 9.5 inch radius neck that is like my Jazz 4 . . . I'm so used to that radius and the rolled edge of the neck.

BTW - I love the adjustable bridge saddles on the SRX705NT that allow you to attain more (or less) tension on each individual string. I have the B and E tight, the other 3 on the more loose adjustment.

That would be a shame to let that one go, IMO.

Like you said "you wanted something different sounding". :D

I'm not in the club yet, however I might be very soon. I went into my local guitar shop today intending to try the Squier vintage modified jazz bass but they only had a left handed version (difficult to make much of an assessment when you're a righty!). So instead I played around with an Ibanez SRX430 and loved it.

I didn't get to have much of a play with it. I'm going back at the weekend and if I can get some nice tones from it will probably buy it. I've been without a bass for a while -- too long!

One question: how versatile are these basses tone-wise? Obviously the PRF pickups are designed for Ibanez's hard rock/metal staple but can they do a lot else besides?

All attempts to convince me to join the club are welcome.

Alot of people think there a bit harsh. And yes they can be if thats what you want but I can dial in alot of great tones. and different things will effect your tone such as pick up heights strings, ect... I find if you keep a fresh battery in it can do quite a bit. Im super happy with mine.

Good luck with your serch and keeps updated!

Consider me joined! Terrible camera phone photo, but here we are:

It is indeed very versatile and you can get a lot out of it without losing its own characteristics. Pretty pleased on the whole. Not too happy with the setup. Was set up extremely low in the shop such that it was rattling all over the place. Ideal for metal heads, not so much for anyone who wants smooth tones. I've raised the action a bit but it isn't quite right. Probably could use a setup from someone who knows what they're doing. But its still a lot of fun regardless.
