Fall is official here (in the Northern Hemisphere), people are putting up Halloween decorations and I've now got a lot of Goth in my music rotation. I know a lot of the 80s classic, but I'm curious what other Goth music people are enjoying.

Like the punk thread not too long ago, let's keep it respectful.

I'll start with this classic from The Cure. Love how bass and drum focused this track is, and Simon Gallup's use of phaser (?).

The Gothmother….

Now, I’m sure there will be those who will want to argue what is/is not Goth, but it’s ultimately pointless as it’s an interpretive thing, and a big enough stylistic umbrella to take in all sorts of laterally related genres/bands.

Some proper goth history right here. And I'm with you, it's a more expansive label than people may think. Let's also give it up for people like Screaming Jay Hawkins who absolutely brought all the theatrics and love of the dark and unsettling to this music.

I would contend that The Doors, at least early on, were a contributory factor(Jim and Nico had a lil’ something something going on as well). Then, just randomly, besides the goofy novelty stuff like “Monster Mash”, there were all those “teen death” hits of the early 60’s. Going further back, Robert Johnson’s “Hellhound On My Trail” had creepy vibes, then there was the eerie “Last Kind Words” by Geeshie Wiley. “Ghost Riders In The Sky”? I think all that counts somehow.

Aging Goth Club kid here. I still go see shows occasionally with an old DJ buddy of mine. As a musician I tend to be less impressed with folks dancing around behind their Mac Books. Of all the Gothic Industrial the acts still touring, no one has impressed me more than Gary Neumann.

He’s legit one of my all time favorite artists. Brilliant. And ushering in orchestrated keys but with a full electric band and live drums most of the time. Game changer.
