GR Bass review

Yes, exactly
  • GR Bass support told me to contact IMS
  • IMS told me they had a few AT and NF bass cabs for demo in their show-room, and that I could come to see and try them, but it was far away from Paris
  • Before I could plan a visit to IMS, I saw an add on Facebook from Bass Maniac about Natural Fiber cabs, so I called them directly, they said they could order it from IMS for me.
  • But I'm pretty sure that if you contact IMS they can give you the list of shops who have GR Bass cabs near you, and even if these shops don't have the exact model you want they can order it from IMS for you (I think you cannot order directly from IMS).
  • Even if you only see the old ranges on IMS website, I *know* they do have at least a few of the new series.
I'm starting to think I was really really lucky to find this cab so early. I still haven't seen any NF cab other than mine anywhere.

Good luck to you, if you find a cab you want, grab it quickly while it's still available.

Or be patient, because I'm sure things will be easier in a few months.

Hello gtirard,

Thanks for the infos.
It's been a long time now since I hear that things will be better in a few months.
:)

Just added this big guy (the One 800) to join its little brother and so far so cool! It really is a beast of power and tone. I think I'm going to like taking it out if its tone is as good as the little Mini One (or better). Not sure about the light show LEDs but I'm willing to give it a try. Love the form factor and build quality. It will get a lot of use this month!

How does the tone of the GR compare to the Trickfish?
I will give both a good going over this weekend. The Trickfish certainly feeds my OCD need to match the cabs and amp so I may keep it just for that. Or maybe I just go and get some GR cabs to match the heads! :). I do love the TF cabs (I have a 2x8 and 1x10) so it will be tough to swap them out. But the GR amps are awfully good and like with most of my stuff, I found a good deal here on TB.

I'm not much of a knob fiddler so I look for good tone straight up. So far the 800 has been like that for me (picture notwithstanding). Anyway, I'll give some feedback though I am a terrible tester.

I found this excellent demo of a GR Bass 800 amp on a pair of AT112H cabs. Talented player with a wide range of styles and how he sets the amp for each style.

This is one of the best demos of a bass system I've heard in a long time. Great playing, style and groove with simple explanations of the amps flexibility. Very nuanced and soulful mastery of the instrument that reflects in whats coming from the amp and how the amp re-enforces great playing. Kudos.

Hello,
There may be a few grams of difference but you can consider the same weight for both.
The Carbon fiber line has a very flat and open sound, the natural fiber is flat but the sound is a little bit less open.
The idea can be that the sound of natural fiber line is the point between wood and carbon fiber.

@GR Bass Staff is there any difference in sound with the natural fiber versus the carbon fiber cabinets? Are you going to offer the Cube Acoustic in natural fiber ever? Any difference in weight?

awesome Thanks! Are you going to offer the AT Cube Acoustic in natural fiber one day? By “open” sounding do you mean less punchy? Is there any difference in durability?

How does the tone of the GR compare to the Trickfish?
So, I am absolutely LOVING my Mini One 800. In fact, I've posted my Trickfish Mini 500 head for sale here on TB.

As far as differences, the GR is a tone monster with TONS of variety and options that should appeal to anyone. Plus, the "Pure" setting means I can quickly bypass everything and get a very clean, uncolored tone.

The TF Mini 500 is a good head and I wanted to love it especially since it matches my cabs. But it is dull and lifeless in comparison and frankly a little quiet for a 500 watt head. The GR is LOUD. But mostly it is quite "vibrant" to my ears and really makes my TF cabs come alive in a way that I just couldn't coax from the TF Bullhead amp.

My rig is now the GR 800 and Mini for backup and home use. The fans are noisy but in a loud stage/club/bar environment it is the least of my noise worries. And at home it never comes on.

Size and weight are great and the lightshow is kind of fun. People do notice it and it makes for a conversation starter.

The 800 is a keeper. Might be looking at GR cabs down the road but they are expensive and as I said, I'm very happy with the Trickfish cabs (10 and 2x8). I'd love to side-by-side the GR cabs but trying anything slightly esoteric and boutique-y is damned near impossible these days.

Hope that helps a bit.

Just a word of caution...was playing with tone controls and had the mids up full. When I switched the little frequency dip switches, I got a very loud, high-pitched pop that I thought might have damaged the cabs. I don't think it did but it sure hurt my ears.

I guess the advice here is to make sure your controls are dialed back before changing the switch settings. Didn't see that in the manual!

Thanks for the warning. I have a MiniONE and if I remember at rehearsal I will try out at low level if It has the same problem.

I feel that I need to share here my love for GR’s customer support. They were always responding to me in a few minutes, doesn’t matter if it was DM on Instagram or an email.
Recently I’ve bought AT210V+ (600W!), but couldn’t find a cover for it, so I wrote directly to GR. On the next day the cover was already shipped to me!
And now about the cab. I knew that I won’t use that additional 200W which comes with “+”, but the price tag for that particular AT210V+ was too good. It was described as new, but I think that it was B-stock, because there was some rattling around 100Hz. It seems that some screws were loose, because after tightening them all the rattling went away - probably I’ll need to put some glue into screw holes to prevent it from happening again. It’s very efficient, loud as hell, light as a feather (9kg/20lb) and sounds really clear and full. What’s more - I’m driving it with just 300W (Eich T300) and I feel that it’s more than enough! I know it’s enough. But I can also imagine how beautiful it would sound with a tube amp… Maybe I need one?

I wonder if there is a problem with your amp.
This would be a deal killer for me.

Perhaps the good folks at GR can give their thoughts on the matter?

Hello,
Unfortunately I can not give an answer just reading the post.
It certainly does not seem a normal thing.
Anything does not seem to work properly I recommend reporting it by sending a video to [email protected] or the whatsapp/Telegram number +393518110465.
We will be happy to answer even simple doubts.

Well, good news I guess...I haven't been able to replicate the loud pop. Maybe a sticky pot? I'll keep trying but I hope this is the way.

Thanks for the quick response GR!
