I'm following the "over 50" thread, and while I'm not a member of that group yet the time is coming fast...

It seems that there are more than a few of us gray-haired guys who are going the hair-dye route. I've considered this but I'm not the type to normally do it, I'm only interested in it because of playing live music.

Thing is, I don't want to go around in my everyday life with colored hair... but I also don't like being on stage with the gray. I'm not white-all-over like Jay Leno... yet... but it seems to be working for him... he seems relevant to all ages, even with the whiteness...

(Is there such a thing as temporary dye?)

How are all you gray-haired dudes getting by? What's your position on this issue? GRAY GUYS ONLY, please vote and also comment...

You can have stylists highlight portions your hair-without dying all of your 'remaining' hair.

If you choose to color it, as women would say, you should continue as often as needed, or you will have the old growing out and looking like a woman does when her roots are growing out (a different color).

Some people's hair is just plain unattractive (doggy looking) as they grow older. And, don't listen to the shave it all bald people, because you need the right head shape to not look goofy with that look!

I've been dealing with gray since I was 15! (44 now!)

I go back and fourth between bleach and dark brown/black - I grow my hair out long for a year or two then buzz it... it's kind of like a toy for me! LOL

IDK about temp color - you could always do a wig - but they get hot on stage!

I'm a high school teacher... I have a little bit of freedom with my appearance.

I started going gray in my mid 30's (dark brown/red hair). By 45 I was pure silver. Full thick silver hair. I always said, If I dye it it will fall out. Better gray than gone. I am 53 now and my hair is still thick and long. I think nothing looks worse that a guy that is in his 50's and doesn't have a single gray hair on his head. Looks phony.

I'm older than the rest of the guys in my band by 10 years or so, and am the only one with grey (salt and pepper, really). I won't say it hasn't crossed my mind to cover the grey, but in the end it seemed kind of silly, plus I know the kind of sh*t I'd get from my fiancee if I did something like that! :rollno: Besides, I'm glad to still have hair, when another member of the band is shaving his head to camouflage a receding hairline....:hiding:

56 and pretty damn grey,..or silver, as I prefer to call it! ;) My wife will occasionally mention that I should color my hair, or at least a portion of it. I always tell her,...hell,..when I was younger, we used to pay a stylist to get all those silver streaks in my hair,..now I get it for free! :smug: No color for me TY, I lived a long time through a lot of crap, and I deserve every silver hair I have!:bassist:

My hair is not graying yet, but my beard (goatee) is. I'm not comfortable with face baldness, so I've been considering combing in some waterproof mascara through the gray patches... My sister who is a stylist gave me the idea. I did a test run and it made me look ten years younger. I'm not dead set on the idea though I'd be willing to try it out for my gig next week.
