You can have stylists highlight portions your hair-without dying all of your 'remaining' hair.

+1

I'm 51, and the salt is starting to become more and more apparent.

I went to the drug store and stood in the men's hair color aisle for a good half hour reading the ingredients, directions, warnings, etc.

I walked out with a Snickers bar.

I will never do the over-the-counter, do-it-yourself thing. Too much mess, too much upkeep. If I decide to get my hair colored, I will go to a pro and pay to get it done right.

But for now, salt and pepper suits me just fine.

I'm following the "over 50" thread, and while I'm not a member of that group yet the time is coming fast...

It seems that there are more than a few of us gray-haired guys who are going the hair-dye route. I've considered this but I'm not the type to normally do it, I'm only interested in it because of playing live music.

Thing is, I don't want to go around in my everyday life with colored hair... but I also don't like being on stage with the gray. I'm not white-all-over like Jay Leno... yet... but it seems to be working for him... he seems relevant to all ages, even with the whiteness...

(Is there such a thing as temporary dye?)

How are all you gray-haired dudes getting by? What's your position on this issue? GRAY GUYS ONLY, please vote and also comment...

I started dying my hair years ago, so nobody knows the difference.

Do it, you will feel better and younger

I would dye my hair / beard whenever I had a gig with my previous original band. I was a "support" member and the lead guitarist and singer were excellent songwriters wanting to make a serious go of it, and image mattered to them, I liked the music so I did my part ... not that it made me look 24 instead of 42, but maybe it made me look 39! lol

Now, in two cover bands I'm in, I'm still the only "greybeard" in each band but I'm extremely happy to leave the Just For Men on the store shelves. Not that image doesn't matter in cover bands, but "distinguished and experienced" seems to work better in that context :)

At the end of the day, I think me and my wife were the only ones who ever realized any difference either way ... I wasn't fooling anyone!

I'm 45. Only a little gray in my hair, but my mustache is half gray and my beard (goatee) is pretty much completely gray. Playing out is something I'm fairly recently (February) returning to after a long time. After seeing the pictures from the first couple of gigs, I started working on my weight. Then the mustache/beard dying suggestion came pretty strong from my wife. It went over well.

I've lost 40 lbs so far and I break out the Just For Men before gigs. I feeling better and better.

If you think you'd feel better doing something with your hair. I say do it.

been s&p for years. keep it buzzed/shaved & have since before it turned. have varying facial hair that turned before the top.
gray or not gray won't matter to the RIGHT chick except bimbo's of ANY age. I know.
only exception is to above is below.
dyed ALWAYS looks it, just like ANY 'piece REGARDLESS of price!
personally believe both are BAD calls, unless you want first impression to be "jerk/loser".
chicks with dyed or 'pieced dudes are...
* in the above category with him
* with him before gray
* he's got tons 'o $$ and/or a big wacker

I've dyed my hair countless colors. To dye it black and not look out of place playin w guys half my age isn't an issue. I think it's one of those things that seems like a big deal until you do it once or twice. Then it's like shaving.

Just realized I don't even know what color my hair actually is. :)

I joke with my life that for my mid-life crisis, I'm going to get blonde highlights like all the Asian kids around here seem to have.

Get some neon around the undercarriage of your souped up 'yota, and I think you may be able to pull it off!

I always figured I'd be dead by now, so the gray is a badge of honor. Besides, with my gray temples I look like Pauly Walnuts!
