Is streetlight manifesto christian? I'm afraid I'm pretty ignorant about that genre, great bassist though. Please expand on what you consider the characteristics christian genre, I'm pretty interested, as I don't think I've come across it before. What are bands that play 'christian music' by your definition?

Anthony Salee. Played for White Heart and Michael W. Smith and session work for other artists. Not flashy but some amazing stuff IMO.
Actually, they're both Christian. Head became one first, and left the band. Fieldy became one later, and talks quite a bit about it in his book Got The Life. Now he just to need to become great.
The only problem I have with Christian music as a genre, is that it encompasses so many other genres. Theres Christian rock, Christian Metal, Christian rap, pop, blues, folk... whatever your into, you could probably find it. There are also bands that are kinda in between. Members are Christian, so they sign deals with Christian labels, and perform at christian music festivals and such, but the music isn't any more Christian than any other band. Switchfoot, for example, i think would fall into that group.
Personally i'm not a fan of much christian music because the lyrics tend to be quite cheesy, IMO. Demon Hunter is a decent christian metal band, though...
You have to tolerate some metal, but Steve Rowe back in the Mortification days had a bass solo on an album (I will have to look it up) that was VERY melodic and grooved like no ones business. He has some REAL nice bass tone too for a metal band.

I saw them at Chili Cookoff in DC and they covered Beastie Boys (which I kinda GUFFAWED at for a Christian band) Sabotage and it was awesome. The bass was dead on.
Just want to point out there is really no such thing as Christian music. Music itself is not Christian, Satanic or whatever. The music is indifferent it doesn't care. It is the lyrics and the people playing the music that generally categorize the music. I listen to and play a lot of music with Christian lyrics, but also pretty much listen to Octane on XM all day. Even at a lot of churches these days there can be one or two "secular" songs a week. I say secular because the artist may not be considered a Christian artist but the music and the lyrics maybe both positive and relevant.
Sorry for the slight derail, but there are some great and more well known players that have been mentioned here that are "Christian" musicians. I think the cool thing is if you get hooked up with a church that is passionate about music, you will see not only very talented bass players but other other musicians as well. I know I am at the low end of the talent pool at my church but it is awesome to see and get to play with some great musicians.

The last time i was in my local Hastings music store, they had a "Christian" section of music, as well as "rock", "country" "jazz" "blues". So i dont see how some of you say there is no such thing. There IS a Christian based music genre! There are Christian radio stations, major Christian artists, Christian music awards! Surely you old musicians knew Kerry Livgren left Kansas to pursue his career as a Christian artist? Or John Elefante of Kansas? Same thing...

Well if you want to hear a VERY diverse and great playing bassist I would checkout Tim Gaines - Stryper's bassist. He has a couple of solo CD's and done alot of session work too.

How about bass players how play for bands who's music is Christian themed (I think that this will please the PC crowd) in that case I 2nd the nomination of Terrance Palmer. Took over for Fred Hammond when Fred was big in his solo stuff now with Isreal Houghton...see here

Tim Gaines is very good ...when i was a youngin listening to STryper it was all guitar and vox i heard ....then i checked out the newer live DVD from hmm ...brasil or somewhere ....he's laying it down hardcore.
Ahh you guys missed my point. I am a Christian and play both at church and in a "Christian" band. Not trying to be PC, just stating that the lyrics and the artist is how the industry categorizes the music, but the music without the associated lyrics or artist is just music. That all.
