Great Pizza

I live near Old Forge, PA, which people claim as "pizza capital of the world", and the main street is lined with tons of pizza joints. So my favorite?...

Adriaticos New York Style in Columbus, OH (right by OSU's campus). I have yet to find a pizza place as amazing as there, and when I return back home shortly, I am making a stop by to grab a pizza as large as my desk!

i live half a mile from a place that serves "old-forge" style pizza.. its awesome stuff

the only pizza vendor listed in this thread that i have ready access to is bj's. how about great pizza places that are a bit more widespread?

Move to New Haven, problem solved.

Food chains suck, plain and simple. Italian food chains suck harder. Isn't that the whole point of this thread? ;)

Some of these places will send you a frozen one to heat up. And quite honestly, that still beats the pants off of the national chains IMO.

That includes my favorite Chicago joint, Gino's East.

As Passinwind says, Frank Pepe's is da bomb.

Old Reliable.

White clam pie. Jane & Michael Stern published a recipe which is very accurate. No need to travel to New Haven CT.

Check out the sublime thinness of the crust on the tomato pie.

The key is the coal-fired brick oven. Something like 700 degrees F.

As far as chains go, Bertucci's is tolerable, but I don't think they've made it to Texas.

I started this thread with a shop that's 200 miles away from where I live. Maybe it's the distance that makes it seem so good, but the locals who recommend it to me when I visit family and friends in Williamsburg may differ. They all adore the stuff, too.

Obviously I'm partial to NYC style. There is some good local NYC style pizza here in the DC area, but Carmine's is the Real McCoy™.

We've got Cappuano's here in Pataskala. They're very good, but the BEST PIZZA I'VE EVER HAD comes from a little shop in Wiesbaden, Germany called Papa Leoni's. That pizza was made by real Italians straight from the Boot. They had the best sauce recipe I've ever tasted. I'm not sure if they're still around since that was back in 1984-1987 but if I knew they were, I'd make it a trip to go over there and get their pizza one more time.

The Flying Goat.

Their claim to fame is the wood fired oven they use. They have a pizza called the Dalton which is BBQ,...smoked pork,...caramelized onions and cole slaw. Unbelievably good. Excellent beer selection too. Always something unique on tap. A little yuppie though.

My mom really likes Leonardo's in Cedar Rapids. I usually surprise her with a sausage and mushroom pizza when I head home for the weekends. I suppose it reminds her a lot of her childhood. The crust is awesome; sort of like a dense cracker on the edge but soft under the toppings.

One of my favorites was actually Gumby's Pizza, which usually seem to be around universities. They had some really creative specialties. The Stoner Pie was pretty awesome, which had mozzarella sticks, fries, and bacon on it. It may have also had chicken tender chunks but I don't remember.

I like just about any pizza place that offers a good BBQ chicken and pineapple pizza. I'm not very picky so I don't mind places like Papa Johns and Dominos.

The only "chain" restaurant pizza I've ever had and liked was Rocky Roccoco and they don't have a very far reach. The one here in Spokane is the only one in the state. There are a bunch in Wisconsin and one in Minnesota.

All the rest suck.

Chanellos in Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Chesapeake has (or had) great pizza. Again,...locally owned and kicks the crap out of Papa Johns,..Dominos,...or Pizza Slut.
