I'm a huge fan of John Sykes' work. I know he's not the most technically proficiant guitarist out there, but I dig his tone and style. For technical mastery I'm partial to Steve Morse or Jeff Beck. On that list I'm going to have to go with Jimmy Page, but Hendrix is a close second. Before deciding he was a blues genius I enjoyed Gary Moore a lot; his work on Thin Lizzy's Black Rose album was great. Yes, Thin Lizzy is where I became aware of John Sykes as well. Or was it Whitesnake?

Surely the best arguement for Moore is "Murder in the Skies". As great as Black Rose was, blues shredding is just something else...

does NO ONE know who Jason Becker is?!?!?!

greatest person to ever touch the guitar, period. the man has ALS and he has since composed two full albums...not to mention what he did on guitar was amazing. when he was less than 16 years old, he managed to play Paganini's 5th Caprice...something Yngwie Malmsteen (who knew who THAT hack was in the 80's...) said was impossible to play on the electric guitar...

This poll has so much lacking...

There may be a couple hundred excellent guitarists but from time to time there are those who stand out from the crowd.

I'm going to keep myself to the rock genre only.

Are there better than these guys? Sure. But they were innovators and probably the biggest influences on the masses and those that followed.

Eddie Van Halen - noone was doing what he did in the late 70's-80's

Page, Hendrix, Blackmore, Fripp, Knopfler, Howe, Vai, Rhoads, SRV, Malmsteen, etc...etc...etc...

;)
John Lennon and George Harrison weren't even the greatest guitar players in the Beatles.

Although I am probably the biggest Beatle nut in the world....

I may have to agree with that..... Every one knows Ringo was the best guitar player that ever walked the face of the earth!!

Hell...... Paul was just the damned bass player....;)
