greenboy's non-fEARful cabs

I have yet to see a picture of a 8888. Might get me gassing....

I'm thinking about one in a 412-type configuration, but with Faital 8FE200s. More displacement than an 88 w/8PR200s for 2/3 the driver bucks. Of course a bigger & heavier box, but still not big or heavy.

To me, purely from a price perspective, a "Double88" w/8PR200s doesn't make sense. If someone just plain old wants one, though, no worries then. Sure would be a sweet box, no question.

As a tightwad, I can agree with you - the bang/buck ratio of (4)8PR200s is unfavorable when compared to a fEARful. But if you like the tone, form factor and scalability, and the cost is tolerable, I don't see a problem.

Re: the 8FE200... Have you modeled that speaker in a cab? I haven't, but just glancing at the spec sheet, the Fs of 80hz makes me skeptical of it's low-end potential. And arranged in a square? No thanks.

I apologize in advance, I havent kept up with the various megathreads.

How does the woofer in the crazy 8 stack up against the S2010?

My needs/wants etc have changed, however a few years ago I'd have gone apoplectic over a little cab like this.

And around half the sD. remember to tell the whole story. The actual displacement figures are going to be pretty similar (small edge for the Faital; but it's slightly less sensitive too). Overall maxSPl should be within a db or so.

Yes, again, I agree, if you want an 8PR200 Double88 for the reasons you mention, then great. Sure it would be the cat's pajamas.

No, haven't modeled a Double88 w/8FE200s. Might not look good, don't know at this point. I have an iMac. Maybe someone reading is interested enough to run WinISD on 4 of them. Or not ;) . Just putting it out there.

As far as a Double88 configuration, no, as mentioned, not square, but rather a "staggered" look ala 412s. Also thinking about a straight "array" setup.

checked out the vd (volume of air moved---sd x xmax). Even though the 8pr obviously has a smaller sd it's vd is about 10% higher. So pretty much apples to apples.
It (the eminence) does have a lower fs which is nice. Thermal rating is 50 watts less Also looks like a stamped frame which isn't a deal breaker. Only thing that bugs me is the "eminence midrange peak" which is a bit nasty---but some like it.
The 8pr is smoother and more extended through thy mids which I like. I think that the Eminence head to head with the 8pr would yield a similar volume.
One thing that I like about the 8's and 88's is the modularity. A column with 2 88's is pretty awesome sounding. The ability of turning one a bit or putting one horizontally on the floor for more floor coupling and one vertically on top is pretty cool. But I won't argue that it's expensive---especially since dynamically it competes with the uber 15's. But they sound pretty cool and the flexibility is nice.
You probably could build a nice cab with the Eminence's. I caution against the typical 4 x 10 configuration---really messes with the sound. You'd be better off building two 2 x 10's and stacking them.
The 8pr is a better sounding driver I think but you can get a respectable cab with the Eminence. I'll model it and get back.

The 8fe doesn't impress me. Too low xmax and too high fs.

The S2010 stays flat down low in a tiny box (.75cf or so), IIRC. Definitely a great little driver that's underrated. It occupies a nice little sweet spot; decent xmax, low fs and high enough q to be used for bass.

The Faital 10PR300 seems like a logical choice but its lower q and higher fs makes it pretty crappy for a bass driver in comparison to the 8PR200. Modeling it should show it falling off a good bit earlier.

One nice thing about the S2010 is the incredibly light weight. it's around a pound lighter even than the 8PR200. so you could, in theory, get away with an even lighter box with similar performance.

Yeah---none of the 10's impress me---which is why I went to the 8pr. Don't like the 10pr. Do like the 12pr---we have a new cab coming out this week with it. I think the S2010 is the best of 'em---but I thought that a tweet was a necessity to extend the mids and get rid of that nasty peak. And you'd have to cross over pretty low which would necessitate a cone mid or a bigger horn. But if that peak doesn't bug you it would work ok. Checked out the Deltalite 10---not much of an advantage over the s2010 and an even nastier mid peak.

I'm pretty sure that Duke offered a midrange smoothing circuit for free for the S2010. that combined with a high pass only horn might work out well for most folks.

The 12Pr looks very nice. Kind of in between the 3012Lf and 3012Ho, which is really the zen of bass drivers imho. Looks like you could get a lot of mileage out of a 2x12 with.

+1, thanks for the input guys. I've used the S2010 in quite a number of different cabs and have been impressed with how versatile it is. Very forgiving of cab size and tuning. I didnt find it to have a harsh mid peak at all... much less so compared to the DLII2510. IMO its a very under rated so long as you dont intend to smack it with huge power.

No thread hikack intended, and those crazy8 style cabs look great!

yeah---the 12pr is warmer than the 3012ho and obviously not as extended in the lows or as powerful as the 3012lf. But still a very respectable low end---a bit flatter than the ho.
Midrange definition is still very nice---sounds like a family member with the 8pr.

Imo the thing that sets the 8PR200 apart from other speakers in its general size/output category (where it competes well with many 10s) is its exceptionally smooth, articulate, extended midrange. That may or may not be the voicing you're looking for, but if so, there it is in a very elegant little package.

Concerning naming the 1x15 Bassic 115; didn't SWR have to change the name of their Bassic Black 1x15 combo to Basic Black due to some other company having the rights to Bassic?

Good looking design, hate to have a name put a crimp in it...

The resonant frequency is a concern, yes, but not 100% convinced (yet, lol) it's a deal-breaker.

As for Xmax, it's sure not the PR, but very few drivers are. A 2x8 w/FEs could still be decent (aside from the very possible resonant frequency item), but I'd want to use the FEs in a Double88 (larger & heavier, granted, but also slightly higher Vd & less expensive).

I'm finishing up the cab and will have pics up today.I think that the comparison with the 3012ho and 3015 is good. An early cab that I built with the 12pr came in at 14.3#. My current cabs are about a pound heavier. I using heavier fiberglass which uses more epoxy. I felt that it was needed for durability. I'll have weights up today.
We're also doing it with the 3012ho. We're adding a switchable filter circuit that smooths the midrange response of the 3012ho. Or not---with a switch. We're also adding a tweeter as an option. .

If you're willing to go larger and heavier and don't like paying for the very capable 8PR200s, why not build something else like a 1x12? I understand that people are always trying to spend less, but if what attracts anyone to the Crazy 8s or the fEARfuls is the full-range performance and their ability to get surprisingly loud for their form, I don't see why anyone would try to come up with an emulation that obviously falls short in those regards even before building it.
