greenboy's non-fEARful cabs

The resonant frequency is a concern, yes, but not 100% convinced (yet, lol) it's a deal-breaker.

As for Xmax, it's sure not the PR, but very few drivers are. A 2x8 w/FEs could still be decent (aside from the very possible resonant frequency item), but I'd want to use the FEs in a Double88 (larger & heavier, granted, but also slightly higher Vd & less expensive).

I took a look at the 8FE200 in WinISD. I already had a model; forgot I had looked at this speaker before. It's about as I expected - not bad if you don't need much content below 70hz. Not an obvious choice for bass, IMO.

I'll avoid further posts on this matter, since it's off-topic.

since someone asked-----
Here are pics of the new Bassic 12. This particular one we call the UUU (ultimate ultralight upright) It has the Faital 12PR300. It weighs 15.7 lbs. My cabs went up in weight a bit because I went to heavier fiberglass for the most durability. I might be able to shave off a half pound by going back to the lighter fiberglass on the inside. This cab sounds great with electric but I really like it for upright. The 3012ho versions have a different voicing.
I just put a strap handle on top to save weight. I'm showing the Penn Elcom recessed handle that Greenboy wants to use. It's about 8 ounces heavier.
Leland of Speaker Hardware was over this weekend and chastised me for not having them professionally photographed. He said that they looked a LOT better in person.
I'm working on it---as well as a website---just concentrating on getting orders out!

Kindof a dumb reply but it sounds like it sits between the 8PR and the 15PR. A bit warmer in the low end than the 3012ho. That's why I like it so much for upright---a bit more "romantic" low end than the HO. But still plenty good in the thump department. With the HO you need to turn the bass control up one notch to equal the 12pr. Which really means nothing to me---it drives me nuts when guys compare two speakers at the same settings and say "this one has more bass".Who cares if you have to turn the bass up a notch? (I'm done with my rant)
The 12pr has a very smooth midrange that extends a few k higher than the HO. The Ho ultimately goes just a bit louder. One thing I really like about the Faitals is that they run out of steam very gracefully. Very little "fartout" before you're smacking against the back plate. And they are hard to blow up. (I've tried with the 8pr but ran out of courage)
I'll be building a box (same box) for a 3012ho next week with Greenboy's "midrange smoothing circuit" Even with the circuit the HO is likely to have a bit more aggressive midrange. And if someone wants the stock midrange response of the HO there's a switch.

Ooh, that switch idea is a good one!

We're also doing it with the 3012ho. We're adding a switchable filter circuit that smooths the midrange response of the 3012ho. Or not---with a switch.

Two different voicings in one cab, available at the flick of a switch. Virtually two cabs in one. Very nice!

I was thinking about Tom's question about the sound of the 12PR.

The 8PR200 sounds like a great audiophile speaker to me. VERY hifi mids with a warm low end.

The 15PR400 sounds (to me) like a great bass guitar speaker reminiscent of something like the JBL k140 but with a little more extended high end.

The 12PR sounds a bit in between---more hifi than the 15 but less so than the 8.A small bit more ballsy in the way of a bass guitar speaker than the 8 but a bit more refined than the 15. A bit warmer low end than the 15.

Both the 3012HO and 3015 are much more aggressive than the Faitals. The 3015 is a bit more balanced but still has that bite. The 3012HO is wayyyy aggressive. Not necessarily in an ugly sense---just a pronounced midrage tilt. Both the 3012HO and 3015 share the nasty 2k ish Eminence "bump" but more so with the 12.
I've used my Fishman Dual Parametric with the 12. 2 octave attenuation centered at about 1200 hz. About 4db down. Notch at about 1800 hz. About 8db down. Really transformed it into a great sounding speaker I think. That's close to what Greenboy is doing with his filter circuit. Of course it doesn't have the extension of the LF but a punchier low end I think. More immediate.

Thanks, Mike! That is very, very helpful.

Mike - are you using the 8ohm version of the Faital 12PR300? Does the 300W/600W power handling change if you use the 4ohm version? Wondering if the 4ohm version would be worth it to bump volume potential for use w/loud electric bass.

Also, how would adding a tweeter (Eminence APT:50/80?) change the tonal characteristics? Is GreenBoy designing a crossover for that configuration?

(p.s. I appreciate the flood of new and good ideas you've come up with. Very exciting!)

Both 4 and 8 Ohm models have the same power rating. If you have an incredibly low powered amp that could benefit from the extra 2-3dB, then maybe you would consider the 4Ohm. But, for purposes of electric bass, most players will enjoy the 3012HO model which can be driven harder than the 12PR300. There are versions that offers a tweeter with xover for both the 12PR300 and 3012HO models. Greenboy has put up a some info on his forum.
