I won’t post the whole ad, but this is the stuff that makes me feel old. This is just an excerpt from an ad posted today.

We love playing grindcore, and we love playing it fast.He comes the old man in me,

Grindcore, give me a break.

I am so blessed to have been born in the 50s and came on to the scene with all the wonderful artist in the 60s and 70s one of the most prolific time periods for rock and pop music.

Am I ripping on the caliber of the genres of some of today’s younger musicians?

YES!

Well, it's just a genre/sub-genre of another form of music.

I personally don't care for it, but then again I don't care for popular Country music, or any pop music today that is drenched in auto-tune. And adding that, that's fine too. I don't have to get it.

It's all subjective. The music I grew up with (late 80's - 90's) holds a special place in my mind too, but that's because it meant something back then. The 50' - 70's were definitely eras that were defining for rock and roll - but it doesn't mean that music stopped progressing (even if you don't look at it like progress) or stopped experimenting and branching out.

dude im 24 so i grew up around a lot of the newer genres and stuff...grindcore is trash....and theres a reason these bands make like no money doing it.


i like my hardcore and metal....but some sub genres of these types of music just become garbage after a point.


unless the guitar is very very good...and the double bass and breakdowns are not overused....any cookie monster vocals music tends to sound repetitive as hell after the third song in the set/album


theres a reason certain genres make mad loot and others dont. and i dont think its about objective opinion on what is and isnt good music...after a point humans know what music can be pleasing or not

im a big electronic dance music fan too....please youtube speedcore and tell me how thats even music...im a happy hardcore fan and love upbeat techno...but that craps ridiculous

theres a difference between not liking a certain genre but still recognizing it as good music or muscianship and then on the other hand recognizizng utter nonsense

Okay, BW, you *are* trolling a bit here, don't you think? Just a bit?

That said, I'll answer without rancor, since I find this newer metal stuff to be just awful: Listen to pop music from the '60s. Was there ONE really good guitar player in the lot? ONE??? Please, name one who, with critical review, appeared to have any idea how to construct a solo or make project decent tone! Even older EC sounded rough. What made all that music work was the everyone BUT the guitarists. Okay, you're now thinking of Cream - Heck, listen to any old cream - fun, great stuff - but the guitar work was rough at best. Byrds? Same. I think that's why Jimi was such a revelation - he could REALLY play - that forced the other guys to step it up. Then came Santanat and Zep, and suddenly Page started really playing (well, sorta).

My point is this: You love that music because your generation. I came ~10 years after you, so I'm more drawn to '70s music - which, in truth, often sucks. Rather than just pine for the past, I've made a *real* effort to embrace what's good TODAY. Gear today? Better than ever. Music production today? Without DOUBT better than ever. Musicianship? Well, I'll take a studio crew from 2010 over that same crew from 1965 (okay, the Funk Bro's don't count... they were touched by heaven or something). That "teen anger music" of today sounds awful is - well - it's what it's SUPPOSED to do. I am utterly convinced the 90% of folks who listen to grindcore/sludge/death/general annoyancce metal are either teens who want to piss off their parents (Like I did with Sabbath/DP/Zep) or meth heads who just can't grow up. The last 10% our outliers like my buddy here at work Brian - a nerd, a geek - a smart programmer who just happens to like that stuff. Well, good for him. But among musicians? Working musicians? I have yet to meet one who can endure this music. But BW, today's metal is NOT all of today's music. There is more cool music being made today than ever before - the 'net and home recording have allowed a ton of great artists to get their music out - - keep an open mind!

Wow... that went longer than I had expected. Back to work for me!

too bad you werent born in the later era, when all the guitar gods are dead. every other band mate sold out and you see jimi tshirts everywhere. so then punk comes, and things change. then metal gets bigger. and then a while down the road people say hm......lets play fast heavy music better then anyone else.

then the old people come and say "i remember the 50's"............thanks man sorry to come off as a dick but seriously.......you try playing some of it

Grindcore is a legit music style.. you dont like it... thats fine.

Ripping on the caliber of them? LMAO Go to the audition and see what happens lol. I guarantee you'll choose a different way to word what you're ripping on next time.

The "caliber" of most metal musicians would make many players heads spin right off their neck. Play your highest "caliber" solo and I guarantee these guys will have verses or bridges that run circles around it.

Not that Im saying that technical or fast playing validates music but for you to mock the caliber of their musicianship is completely uncalled for.

btw the difference between the subgenre of topic and the 70s music that kids listened to then that mom and dad didnt like.....is that years from now people wont look back and grindcore and deathcore and think...wow what a revolution of great sound and skill.....they are on the bottom rung of pop culture for a reason.....if not even the tiniest blip on the radar....theres a reason for that and the natural human response to sounds and melody....or lack there of

Equally fair to say that "pop" music is at the top rung because most of the non-musician listeners in the world are sheep. If you are trying to validate art by its popularity I challenge you to go buy some Ke$ha or Lil' Wayne and listen all day long.

I remember once long a go when my guitar player was going on about how crappy NSync and Backstreet Boys were. Then a fellow bassist told him "Dude, you're not supposed to like it because you're not a 14 year old girl".

I did a Christmas album we sent to friends that had a Punk Rock version of "Little Drummer Boy" on it. My in-laws were offended. My response was, "Sorry, I didn't record that song for you." I recorded it for my friends who dig Punk. And they did.

Same with Grindcore, you're not supposed to like it because it wasn't made for you. It's sorta like a man complaining that a tampon doesn't fit him.

nnever said it was art. but its def better music than grindcore. lets be serious. theres a reason its fanbase is relegated to immature kids who havent matured and picked up new interests yet.

if i had a dollar for the amount of kids who are into garbage when they are in high school and once they hit college or post college life...they broaden their musical tastes and styles....id be rich


crappy genres are naturally not appealing to the ear. hence lack of popularity really. theres a reason why lighter crap music trumps the hell out of darker crap music

and as i said. i like heavy stuff...but after a point....its just crap...you can call people sheep...but tell me why punk pop blues swing metal and a slew of other genres have been marketable on a grand scale with the exception of todays extreme forms of rock.

these forms which could never be marketable because there could only ever be a tiny minority to enjoy it.


i hope someone would actually engage me on my point about natural human response to sounds and melody.

I just dont see how as a musician you can call something factually better than something else.
Fanbase is relegated to immature kids? No.

yes for the most part the fan base is. i can even admit that as a huge fan of punk music...which i see the fanbase age as similar...and part of why i gave up wanting to play street punk a few years ago....it was musically limiting on bass and all the people in the scene were for the most part immature kids bitching about the government but living comfy lives with mom and dad buying crap.

nyc punk scene btw
