my $.02

If its new and extreme then its worth doing.

I've written many things where I thought it was crap, but still thought it had a place because it was just worth doing/needed to be done.

To me the rule is that there are no rules.

SIDE NOTE: If your the type of person to try new things and you hear something you dont like, wait a month and try it again. Music is emotion and your mood can really affect what you hear.

Total trolling post from blue, so I don't know why I'm replying. Two things, I guess:

1) We remember the very best music that was playing when we were young, and conveniently forget the rest of it. We don't enjoy the same privilege with what's playing currently.

2) I'm no fan of grindcore or any other metal, never really have been. I respect that a lot of the musicians playing it have chops far beyond anything I'll ever achieve, but to me most of it just goes nowhere.

What strikes me about metal these days is that it has subdivided itself into so many infinitesimal subgenres that the bands and the fans seem to really limit themselves. Oh no, it's not a hardcore band... it's not a thrash metal band... and for god's sake not a glam metal band... it's GRINDCORE band. That's DIFFERENT. I'm all in favor of exploring new musicality and developing new genres, but to me it does seem to have passed the point of being productive.

Music is a cultural phenomenon and differs from one culture to another. If what you said were true, that we have some sort of built in predisposition to certain sounds and a natural aversion to others, then no one would enjoy the abrasive sounds of extreme metal acts but plenty of people do. So are you saying there's something wrong with those people, that their liking of abrasive forms of music is unnatural?

Its lack of popularity is because it sprang from an underground culture of people that didn't quite fit in with mainstream society or who are bored/displeased by it. You have people making music for their own culture and sometimes making the music as a rejection of the mainstream so it goes against what's commonplace on MTV and the radio, which is, for the most part, boring garbage made for mindless drunk girls at clubs to dance to. It's not that it isn't popular, the fact that a grind band like Rotten Sound can come over from Finland and tour the US shows that they are plenty popular. It just doesn't appeal to the mainstream ideas of what is good music so of course it's not going to be as popular as whatever top of the charts auto-tuned BS is out now. It's not supposed to be.

punk wasnt sposed to fit in in the 70s and 80s and ....well....look what happened to it and all its off shoots..

i stand by my statements as i said them.but meh grind isnt going anywhere special and its a shame these guys waste their chops on non memorable stuff

Probably the grindcore, because african music, from my understanding, has a huge emphasis on rhythm, often with them contrasting with one another, so the more rhythmically interesting music, like grindcore may be more appetizing to them.

Bottom line though, you have no idea, you just have your opinion, and until you've got something to back it up, your factual statements amount to little more than you talking out of your ass.

When people slag on the taste of others based on generational differences it always seems tacky and short sighted to me. Name any artist or artistic movement that is firmly traditional now and I guarantee there was a point when it was considered ultra modern trash. Impressionist painting, the modern novel, jazz music, rock n roll. Today's avant garde are tomorrow's traditionalists. It's more self aggrandizing to think your own generation is the "last generation" (or the last good one), definitely a time honored tradition in all things human, but hardly realistic, necessary or productive.

^^^^ this!!! Armstrong was a rebel, Sinatra was a rebel, Elvis was a rebel, The Beatles were rebels, Hendrix, The Who, The Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Nirvana ect.ect...When I first heard the Beatles on the German and the Luxomburg radio stations while living in Germany in 62-63 they sounded like some group from outer space...like nothing I'd ever heard. I remember seeing Hendrix doing The Star Spangled Banner on Carson (the Tonight Show for you younger readers) and then sitting down next to Dr. Welby/Robert Young and the look on Young's face was priceless...it was like an alien had just landed and set next to him, and he had!!
If it doesn't offend somebody it ain't rock and roll!!

For my last post that is topical to this nonsense, why does everyone who gets offended by these types of generalizations feel a need to say so? Who cares? You all say "If you don't like it fine, but here a million reasons why you can't say you don't like it". Doesn't sound like you really do think its fine. Whenever someone posts a trolling thread, just hijack it with BS or ignore it. You don't need to defend the honor of everything you like from the internet bad guys.

I dunno about you, but as the internet White Knight of Metal(Oxymoron? Maybe) I find it my righteous duty to come to the defense of metal and metal heads and everything extreme that falls under the huge and awesome umbrella that is Metal. Everything that IS metal in me (namely the pin in my ankle) screams at me (partially due to not completing my rehab), to defend it to the death. And that is what I will do. Wherever music is insulted, you'll find me there!

Hey, I apologize for trolling.But most guys my age are not going to dig any version of metal. But it's no reason to rip on it.

I remember a good friend of mine was so excited about turning me on to a band called Metalica. He played it and I was like, I don't like it and I don't get it. I loved Jimi's Star Spangled Banner on Cavette.

Most of these TBers won't even know who Cavette is.

Look: I just done with a long thread where I had to defend my dislike for "metal" and "Metal culture", so I get what you're saying. But You say that the '60s & '70s were great - - SO IS TODAY!!! There are more great artists recording great music today than ever - you just have to look for it. That kids like noisy music *nothing new*. Some kids grow out of it, some do not... but dude - there is a ton of great stuff out there now - Jazz, funk, R&B, and even some rock & roll with real musicianship and soul...
