Grindcore

I won’t post the whole ad, but this is the stuff that makes me feel old. This is just an excerpt from an ad posted today.

We love playing grindcore, and we love playing it fast.He comes the old man in me,

Grindcore, give me a break.

I am so blessed to have been born in the 50s and came on to the scene with all the wonderful artist in the 60s and 70s one of the most prolific time periods for rock and pop music.

Am I ripping on the caliber of the genres of some of today’s younger musicians?

YES!

You seem to complain a lot.

Ripping on the caliber of them? LMAO Go to the audition and see what happens lol. I guarantee you'll choose a different way to word what you're ripping on next time.

The "caliber" of most metal musicians would make many players heads spin right off their neck. Play your highest "caliber" solo and I guarantee these guys will have verses or bridges that run circles around it.

Not that Im saying that technical or fast playing validates music but for you to mock the caliber of their musicianship is completely uncalled for.

+1. Truth.
Listen to this guy. Not "grind" but he rips. He has his own original stuff too.

I defy anyone to check out the youtube link below and tell me there aren't talented musicians in the grindcore genre. Sure they aren't your typical grind band and it its far from a typical grind song but their roots are firmly in the genre as evidenced by earlier material. At any rate, check it out. and for all the older/grind hating guys who make it past 1:45 you might find yourself a pleasant surprise.

Ok, I don't like grindcore either, but with you bashing it the way you just did, you clearly either a) don't understand it-- it's SUPPOSED to sound like a sloppy, distorted blur, or b) are confusing it with some sort of mallcore.

I know I'm getting trolled, but whatever.

I feel I should point out that grindcore is an offshoot of punk not metal

More a combination of the two, Napalm Death obviously took influence from the punk/hardcore and death/thrash metal scene.

Extreme music will always have a limited appeal. Its not written to achieve mainstream popularity.

To all the grindcore nay-sayers

much like some of the more abstract jazz, if you don't get it, you're not supposed to get it.

I remember once long a go when my guitar player was going on about how crappy NSync and Backstreet Boys were. Then a fellow bassist told him "Dude, you're not supposed to like it because you're not a 14 year old girl".

I did a Christmas album we sent to friends that had a Punk Rock version of "Little Drummer Boy" on it. My in-laws were offended. My response was, "Sorry, I didn't record that song for you." I recorded it for my friends who dig Punk. And they did.
In case anyone wants to hear: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Same with Grindcore, you're not supposed to like it because it wasn't made for you. It's sorta like a man complaining that a tampon doesn't fit him.
YES! So funny!

Remember Nu-Metal? Ah, those were the days...

Every generation thinks they're better than the others. It's a fact of life. We get it. I peronally don't see why we need to have every single member talking about how all new music isn't music. Do I dislike some newer music? Yes. Do I like older music? Yes. Do I point the finger at others and say they don't even listen to music? No.

I defy anyone to check out the youtube link below...

I checked it out, and I felt it was pretty awful. Kinda "everything but the kitchen sink" composition. The drumming was impressive, and pretty much dominated the song -- everything else seemed fairy mundane. Then they throw in a jazzy solo to prove their guitar skill (been done -- RATM did it, and did it better). Remove the screaming and distortion pedal, add an a capella break-down and you have prog. Kinda like Rush, without a hook (or anything really memorable)...

Love metal, hate the goofy labels, hate ads that say stupid crap like "we play it fast..."...

These bands make music because it is a creative outlet ...

Who is it hurting?...

I will never understand why people have to start threads dissing genres or bands they hate. It really is just trolling, and it is insanely annoying. If you don't like it, don't freakin listen to it!!

Sure.
Nobody.
Because that's what people join internet forums for -- to discuss stuff. And "trolling" has lost its meaning these days -- trolling was a way to derail forums from their proper topics. I can't call OP's post a troll... Sure, genre arguments are probably WELL covered topics, but this is a musician's community, this topic at least toes the line of "band management," and in the end, music forum - music discussion -- that's what forums are for. And if you don't like it, don't freakin' read the thread! :D

Metal, grindcore, yes you have to have super chops to play this stuff.

If it's what your into it's cool, me I don't get it, just as if I showed you stuff I think is awesome,I'll bet, you would not get it.

I talk a lot about Pop Culture, particularly in reference to the rock culture and mind set of the whole scene from the 60s and 70s.

Most (not all) younger TBers simply don't get it. Which is understandable as I am to old to understand the apeal of metal and all the off shoots.

The 60s and 70s have been gone for a long time.Whats happening now is whats happening now. As with anything else things have to change and evolve.

The only thing I feel sorry about is that the younger TBers don't have icons like we had and still have.

They don't have a;

Mick Jagger
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Janis Joplin
Jim Morrison
Aretha Franklin
James Brown
Sly Stone
Neil Young
John Lennon

It's not their fault it's just not the right time in musical history for it to happen again.

Mark my words. John Mayer will end up being an icon for many the guitarist and bass players out there one day. He is for some already, esp with his jazzy blues trio

I think we just tipped into the "Last Great Band" thread...

There is really some great heavy stuff coming out now which has a strong jazz fusion influence. I think the genre is sort of called fusion metal at the moment. The writing the and general musicianship really is of a VERY high calibre and many of the new bassists involved are a new generation of fretless players who grew playing stuff from both Pantera and Pastorius.

I find this music a rather nice breath of fresh air.

PS. The bands doing this sort of thing are Exivious, Spaced Out, Counter-World Experience, Planet X, Morglbl, Spastic Ink, Cynic, Obscura. It's music like this ( plus other jazzier forms of fusion ) which indeed inspires me to continue evolving as a musician. Even if some of it does have a "Cookie Monster" style vocal delivery. :D

( and I wouldn't call myself a young guy, I grew up in the 70's )

Okay, BW, you *are* trolling a bit here, don't you think? Just a bit?

That said, I'll answer without rancor, since I find this newer metal stuff to be just awful: Listen to pop music from the '60s. Was there ONE really good guitar player in the lot? ONE??? Please, name one who, with critical review, appeared to have any idea how to construct a solo or make project decent tone! Even older EC sounded rough. What made all that music work was the everyone BUT the guitarists. Okay, you're now thinking of Cream - Heck, listen to any old cream - fun, great stuff - but the guitar work was rough at best. Byrds? Same. I think that's why Jimi was such a revelation - he could REALLY play - that forced the other guys to step it up. Then came Santanat and Zep, and suddenly Page started really playing (well, sorta).

My point is this: You love that music because your generation. I came ~10 years after you, so I'm more drawn to '70s music - which, in truth, often sucks. Rather than just pine for the past, I've made a *real* effort to embrace what's good TODAY. Gear today? Better than ever. Music production today? Without DOUBT better than ever. Musicianship? Well, I'll take a studio crew from 2010 over that same crew from 1965 (okay, the Funk Bro's don't count... they were touched by heaven or something). That "teen anger music" of today sounds awful is - well - it's what it's SUPPOSED to do. I am utterly convinced the 90% of folks who listen to grindcore/sludge/death/general annoyancce metal are either teens who want to piss off their parents (Like I did with Sabbath/DP/Zep) or meth heads who just can't grow up. The last 10% our outliers like my buddy here at work Brian - a nerd, a geek - a smart programmer who just happens to like that stuff. Well, good for him. But among musicians? Working musicians? I have yet to meet one who can endure this music. But BW, today's metal is NOT all of today's music. There is more cool music being made today than ever before - the 'net and home recording have allowed a ton of great artists to get their music out - - keep an open mind!

Wow... that went longer than I had expected. Back to work for me!

I wish there was a "like" button for posts on TB.
