The only thing I feel sorry about is that the younger TBers don't have icons like we had and still have.

It's not their fault it's just not the right time in musical history for it to happen again.

Just because you do not know / like / care for a lot of today's music, does not mean that those artists are not or will not be icons to some.

Like it or not, but someone like Beyonce most likely has a status similar to the people you mentioned. I know a lot of people (boys and girls) who grew up with Destiny's Child and almost 15 years later still think that Beyonce is one of the greatest things to ever happen to music.

Just for laughs I will also throw in Tupac Shakur and Jay-Z. Robbie Williams. Justin Timberlake. Hell, Britney Spears. Icons to millions of people.

Why are you so hell bent on getting attention on this forum anyway? I have practically made it a sport to spot new threads started by you on a daily basis. Most of them seem centered around the same issues: I hate [insert genre] music, I hate start up bands or Here's how you should audition.

If anything people have more access to this stuff than they did back then. The stuff is played on the Classic Rock station everyday. You can download a song anytime. You can watch a video on YouTube anytime. And you can view and listen to lots more now, for free than what your friends in the neighborhood had on vinyl.

They are still around. Don't worry the youngsters still have them, and have them more than you did back in the day and in better quality.

The one thing that Jive was hitting on there that I think is a very good point, from a recorded music perspective, right now is the best time theres ever been to live. We've still got all the old recordings (a lot of which I'm partial to, in fact, I would listen to every single person on Blue Wine's list on a regular basis), plus a whole not more new recordings. Theres something for everyone.

The live music scene is another thing entirely. I'm still bitter that I didn't get to see Thin Lizzy before Phil Lynott died, or Queen before Freddie Mercury died (Your list is distinctly missing Freddie, one of the greatest music icons of all time).

Maybe, and I like John, I just don't think conditions are right for icons right now.Most of the people on that list actually in one way or another did things thst nobody prior to them had done.

My point is this: You love that music because your generation. I came ~10 years after you, so I'm more drawn to '70s music - which, in truth, often sucks. Rather than just pine for the past, I've made a *real* effort to embrace what's good TODAY. Gear today? Better than ever. Music production today? Without DOUBT better than ever. Musicianship? Well, I'll take a studio crew from 2010 over that same crew from 1965 (okay, the Funk Bro's don't count... they were touched by heaven or something). That "teen anger music" of today sounds awful is - well - it's what it's SUPPOSED to do. I am utterly convinced the 90% of folks who listen to grindcore/sludge/death/general annoyancce metal are either teens who want to piss off their parents (Like I did with Sabbath/DP/Zep) or meth heads who just can't grow up. The last 10% our outliers like my buddy here at work Brian - a nerd, a geek - a smart programmer who just happens to like that stuff. Well, good for him. But among musicians? Working musicians? I have yet to meet one who can endure this music. But BW, today's metal is NOT all of today's music. There is more cool music being made today than ever before - the 'net and home recording have allowed a ton of great artists to get their music out - - keep an open mind!.

I think some things I wite about are missed or mis-read.

There are tons of new fantastic Pop Rock bands. I have watched Conan several times in the last 2 weeks, every new band on that show impressed me. However, he has not booked any Metal bands

Every generation thinks they're better than the others. It's a fact of life. We get it. I peronally don't see why we need to have every single member talking about how all new music isn't music. Do I dislike some newer music? Yes. Do I like older music? Yes. Do I point the finger at others and say they don't even listen to music? No.

Not better just different.

There are so many new cool bands with talented song writers and musicians. I could never say the bands I grew up with are better.

I am sorry that you have mis-read some of my threads.

For the record, I think the new Pop Rock bands of today are fantastic. I love it. My GF took me to see Interpol last month, very cool very refreshing.

I think I sort of sound criticle of Metal, hell millions of people buy those bands recordings, so they are doing something right. It's just not for me.

If we didn't have start up bands we wouldn't have any cool new bands. We would be listening to "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"

Start up bands are the core of the future. However I made a decision this week after rehearsing with 2 start ups for a few weeks, that it's not what I should be doing now.

In response to the OP, grindcore is hardly kids' music. The leading bands of the genre (Napalm Death, Carcass, etc) have been around since the 80s and their members are all well into their 40s. Plus, if you go to see these bands live, most of their audience will be the same age as the band.

True, but only to a degree, in theory you can trace everything in Rock back to the blues. But really jive, those guys on the list, most of them had some original thought and creativeness that they expanded on.

So start thread insulting it. Every time you post this stuff, it makes you look incredibly narrow-minded and, as mentioned, makes you look like a troll. I don't like country music, but I understand that making threads about it won't make it go away, or make people like it less. So just give it up, its annoying and stupid. Take the time you would be posting nonsense, and play bass or something worth your time.
