I know that the B3K might really probably work for me...but making up the other $75 is a bit more of a challenge than I'd like it to be. Hence I'm trying to explore the tonal possibilities to help me hunt for the sound I'm trying for in combo with the Barbershop to give it a boost in the OD but also keep the fatness.
Oh but trust me it is worth it. I was desperate to get my hands on a B3K because I couldn't wait to stack up the extra dough for be 7k. After missing several B3K sales in the classifieds and selling stuff I snatched a B7K and now if happiness could measured I'd need a whole new scalef or myself.
I use a BB preamp for my warm, a bit overdriven, tone - probably similar to what you get out of the barber. To 'nasty' this up, I run a Storm Distortion 10 after the BB. This pedal does cut a small amount of bass, but I boost the bass a fair bit using my BB preamp so don't notice. Stacking the two gives a very edgy distortion tone, somewhere between a RAT and an OCD (to my ears).
The Storm is a clone/variation on the MXR distortion+. I was in the studio recently and tried lots of (mostly old guitar) dirt pedals in combination with my BB, and this was a great combo. I think blending / stacking a couple of pedals is the way forward here... tempted to get a crossover mixer/blender pedal and further tweak what I get at present
I've read a few more of the posts, and have to add, I used to run a W&C phat phuk B into my BB to push it. It worked a treat for what I wanted at the time, but didn't nasty it up that much, or really change the character. I think you're looking at finding that magic pedal to go after your o/d that sounds right to you.. so dependant on the rest of your setup though...
