Grounding Question

One wire (usually white, but it doesn't matter) goes to the small lug (tip connector) on the jack. The other wire (usually black) goes to the large lug (sleeve connector, also your ground) on the jack.

thanks for the responses. so should the bridge ground be long enough to reach the sleeve((as it is connected to the soon to be disposed of tone pot))? Or should I go about getting a new one?

That depends entirely on how long the wire is.
If it isn't long enough to make it to the jack, just solder on a new piece of wire to the end and put some shrink tubing over the connection. That's easier than removing the bridge to put in a new wire...
