guitar center north charleston has a couple nice deals.

USA Tobias renegade with barts. 299. a little beat up but seemed like a decent player. also had a 1981 p bass with a Duncan scribe pickup and a ba2 for 799. could use a neck shim but the neck was straight. if you call, ask for Ben Meyer. he's a good sales guy that always takes good care of me, and is a working bassist that knows what he's talking about.

I saw that Tobias. I think this is the same bass talked about earlier in this thread that had a bad neck and a hack job on routing for a Badass bridge.

hmm, didn't realize it had a reputation. I honestly thought it played ok. I only picked it up for a few minutes. it was definitely beat up, but even with the neck issue I still can't see how it's not worth 299 to somebody.

Just for kicks, I called the store and asked what exactly is custom about the bass and why it's priced $30 more than it costs brand new. The guy told me "well it's got an Allen Woody signature and the hardware is gold".

I've seen several instances of GC and MGR pricing things above the new cost. I thought they did a smidge of research before buying something, to prevent that from happening.

My favorite so far is/was a Rogue fretless that is on the GC website, new, for $119. There is a used one marked at $179. I emailed them the link when I first caught it, but the price hasn't changed. They probably paid the guy what they cost new.

As one who has owned a Killer B and currently owns a Rapture JJ, they are both really killer basses, but totally different.

The Rapture, though scaled down compared to a Fender, is tonally like a super J style bass.

The Tobias is a totally different animal, especially since this probably has the second generation of Gibson Tobias electronics. While always using Bart pickups and preamps, on the first generation the switch turns the preamp on and off (I think) while on the second generation, the switch is a three position mid scoop. The second generation of electronics is much more aggressive...but sounds great in its own right.

There's a KSD burner ignition for $179. I'm not sure how good these budget ones are, but it seems like a good price.

I bought a Lakland 55-02 from the Townson, Maryland store. It arrived yesterday with some issues. It buzzed on the lower frets and had some serious fret sprout. The saddles were jacked way up but the action was low. It played OK, but it just wasn't right. I've been doing my own set ups for a number of years. I'm pretty sure this one had a slight hump in the neck. When I tested the upper frets with a straight edge from the 12th-15th fret, there was some fall away towards the body. It just wasn't right. I returned it and to no surprise, it has been relisted at the North Attleboro store where I brought it back, even though they refunded my shipping, admitting that there was an issue with the bass.
