I was chuckling along at another angry teenager thread, and then read that the OP is 26. Wow.

However, in the spirit of everything that is cool about TB, I suggest we ease up on the pile-on, and let the good doctor have his say.

Fair enough.:) The ad threw me for a loop momentarily too, but whether anyone feels the OP was right or wrong, I'm still willing to chalk it up to the frustration of the moment and hope(particularly for his own sake) that he doesn't always come over that way.

Let me be clear: This isn't an isolated incident. This sort of thing has been going on since I started pushing earlier in the year for us to get off our asses and get out there....

Seems like you needed to "man-up" and quit then instead of bullying people that don't agree with you.

When you don't ask for specific agreement for your comments/observations/goals and a timeline for execution, it can all be mental masturbation.

You hooked up with a passive-aggressive guy who wouldn't come right out and tell you that he wouldn't gig. Actually, he did. He just prefers to jam and write tunes. He's not ready for a part-time job or to put the band at the top of his priority list.

I suggest you be more upfront about your goals with future bands and move-on in a more timely fashion when your expectations aren't being met (that you previously agreed upon before you joined the band, of course).

Good luck. :)

I've been in bands in times long past that would have conversations like this about every other week. And then the next week we would get along just fine. I hardly see it as "burning it down and salting the earth." I would probably have a much harder time having a drama queen like you for a bandmate than having the O.P. for a bandmate.

Lol, yes you caught me. With my dramatic post. And weekly cussing and name calling matches aren't dramatic at all. Completely normal and constructive.

Found the CL ad also. That was an entertaining read, to say the least.

This ad?

Bassist stuck in rock and roll purgatory (Plymouth)
F*** my life, I'm stuck in rock and roll purgatory. My guitarist buddy had a mental breakdown because he couldn't handle the responsibility of being the sole guitar player. Too much drama, so I decided to move on.

Anyway, I'm a crazy g**damned bassist looking for a bands to play with.

I want to gig. I love playing with people, but I have no interest in hanging out in your basement for months on end and listening to you b!tch about whatever. Wife's breaking your balls? Got a tough job? That's tough sh!t, but it doesn't relieve you of your responsibilities. I've done it before, and it's a waste of time. F*** that. My a$$ isn't getting any younger. I want to gig and make some money. A man needs to pay for his gear and beer somehow.

I have extensive experience playing in church bands. Listening to sermons between sets isn't my idea of a great time, but it beats not playing music at all. Playing in bands outside of a church setting have been less than stellar for me on account of those bands' utter lack of ambition, commitment, and focus. I have waaaaay too much "jamming" experience.

Most of my influence comes from Jack Bruce, Tommy Shannon, and Sting. I f***ing love Lemmy. John Paul Jones is cool too. I'm getting into more Geddy and Entwistle.

I play a variety of Fender basses and an Ampeg. I can sing lead or backup if required.

Enough yaking. Hit me up if you're interested and let's make music, break sh!t, and f*** girls.

Spark notes:
-Bassist, age 26
-Extensive church band experience
-Blues/rock and roll influence
-Interested in getting out there, not hanging out in your basement
-In need of gear and beer money
-Fender basses
-Let's make music, break sh!t, and f*** girls!

THE PROBLEM WITH TEXTING:

Tone of voice does not translate through text.

So text is fine for raw data and information. Times, places, directions, quick messages. Text is not ok for standard communication which might include humor, sarcasm, encouragement, sincerity, etc..... Basically 90% of what we say carries vocal overtones which establish the context of what is said.

THE PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE GETTING OFFENDED AT YOU:

It's their choice to decide if what you said was offensive or not. If you didn't mean to offend...it doesn't matter, it's their choice to be offended. The other problem with people being offended, is it's pretty hard to make amends. Sorry doesn't cut it.

Don't believe me? Think of the last time you were offended where the person said "oh I didn't mean it like that..." Did that change your mind? Did they say "Sorry" and did that fix everything for you? Not likely, huh.

See what I mean? it's the recipients choice to decide if you are a jerk or not. So if you care about how you come across to other people and you don't want to inadvertently offend someone DON'T RELY ON TEXT AS YOUR PRIMARY MODE OF COMMUNICATION.

such language from a church going lad, and with all that church band experience on his resume he should go far.

Dude, I wish you the best in sorting out your issues and finding the right band mates... but I just saw the ad you posted on my local CL and I have to say it's vulgar and offensive. Show some class and keep the childish profanity out of it. Best of luck finding the right bros to "make music, break ****, and **** girls."

LOL seriously? This OP is the biggest asshat I've seen on TB in a while. Classy dude.

Bandmates argue. Simple fact. So to refer to one argument as "burning down their musical relationship and salting it to the earth" is definitely dramatic.

Especially considering the guitarist ended the conversation by saying, "That's cool...We can jam." It doesn't sound like the bridge is burned, much less the earth salted.

However, having seen the Craigslist ad the O.P. posted, I take back whatever I said about willing to be in a band with him.

1- Of all the bands I've been in, while we've had disagreements, neither me or any of them talked to each other like that. I'm just saying he needs to be more professional and stay on good terms with other musicians.

2- Yes the guitarist did seem to be willing to deal with the OP again. Which is mind blowing. Battered wife syndrome?

3- Yeah, that ad. Wow.

A church goer, huh. Might wanna cut the profanity and constant whining on your CL ad. If I saw this on CL, I'd be turned off and wouldn't bother contacting you.

1. You're, not your.
2. I never claimed to be somebody. But I am pretty awesome.
3. Where I come from, men don't motivate other men by speaking softly about their feelings. They tell each other to gird up their balls and get the job done, or else they've got to go.

1. ya, I probably would'nt play with someone who corrects others grammar AND calls themselves "pretty awesome"
2. *** is "gird up their balls?"
3. He is a friend and your posting a private conversation where you call him a pussy? :rollno:

Sounds like you have way too much time on your hands. Pretty bitchy to say he's not "somebody". Who are you? Just another dude playing covers in the bars. Join the club. He may not have your amount of time available, or your commitment level, but he sounds like a nice enough guy. You are the one throwing around word like "pussy", like a high school jock who uses peer pressure. If your so committed, I'm sure your awesome, so your bound to land a killer band situation. Most people would just BS you for a while, at least he's honest. He's obviously in it for fun, and your not.

Please remember that, when correcting someone's Grammar on the Internet, its in your best interest to be correct in what you're saying. Your lack of specificity has put you in a position where you're in danger of looking foolish, which was probably not your intention. If you are correcting lokikallas for his first usage of the word, then its your mistake. However, if you are correcting lokikallas for his second usage of the word, then you're absolutely correct.

Also, you actually have inadvertently claimed to be somebody, or someone, as it were; you've claimed to be someone who is ready to play gigs. However, that remains to be seen, as you have not yet done so.

Finally, the idea that men speak to each other about their testicles for motivation is an odd one. It is not true in all cases. It is often true in HBO movies, and comedy shows, but in the real world, you would be surprised at how frequently the conversation begins, and ultimately resolves without any mention of gonads.
