H1N1 Hype

Which means very little when it comes to a viral infection that you likely have no immunity to
I'm a gov't contractor for the Department of Health and Human Services, so i get to hear all sorts of lovely H1N1 stuff alllllllllll day. It's strange though, we've been getting updates constantly since last year, but the media loves to hype things like this as the kids go back to school... which i think is pretty messed up.
I had a conversation with a co-worker and we both agreed that they just didn't want to ruin vacation revenue with media hype in the summer.
Blah blah blah... i can't really talk about it too much. But i DO think it's pretty hilarious that down the street at CDC they are selling plush H1N1 virus beanie babies! http://news.aol.com/article/cdc-gift-shop-sells-swine-flu-toy/652552
...so i mean, it says something.

Here are some things to think about:
Is it really spreading that fast?
Is that really any faster than the regular flu or cold spreads?
Is it possible that the media attention have lead to hypersensitivity and overeaction to symptoms?
Could this heightened sensitivity be leading to over-diagnosis?
How many of the swine flu cases at your school have been confirmed with antibody tests?
Did you know that all flu viruses can migrate between the human, swine and avian populations?
Is it possible that the term "swine flu" is used for this because it is much sexier than "summer 2009" flu?
Whther it is H1N1 or not is mostly irrelevant. Like is said - my wife (a family physician) has seen flu after flu after flu. She usually doesn't see any flu cases in September. The same goes for the other docs in town. No matter what you call it all you have to do is look around (at least in Texas) to see that we are at the beginning of a very large flu epidemic. That doesn't mean that there are going to be piles of dead bodies but it is what it is.

Everybody was worried when it came out and that's fair enough but the people that I know that had it (they had tests to it definitely was H1N1) just said they felt like hell for a week and that was it. Unless you have some other problems then I doubt it's anything to worry about. AFAIK the only people who have died in this country had other medical problems anyway.
I believe i just passed it a month ago, There is a lot of hype about it... A lot more people die every year from normal flu than from this "special" flu.
That is my point. I'm not concerned that we're all going to die, I was just surprised at the sheer number of people around here that are getting it.
This is a unique strain. The important thing to be aware of is if it mutates as all flu's do in the fall and winter, it could mutate into something really ugly. Sadly, American media has this whipped up on a level akin to Paris Hilton caught with no panties. It's not a political ploy. It's not a conspiracy. It's not a creation of Republicans or Democrats. Take a bit of time getting informed at the CDC or WHO websites. Don't take the advice of bass players on TB. Read about it and learn.
Well BMC, remember what happened in 1918. Lot's of people got really sick and died as well.
Let's hope it doesn't mutate into something really "ugly"
I do think that my Son & I are in the age group that has the best chance of survival in case things get that bad.

A thought about vaccination: pharmaceutics havent dissclosed wich strain is being used for the vaccine.
Usually a vaccine needs to go through several tests that take long time to be fully investigated, 10 years or so i believe. It hasnt been a year since the discovery of swine flu on humans.
How convinient now that war/postwar is coming to an end there is this new "need" of a pharmaceutical product. Guess wich companies are yet to find out the meaning of economical crysis...

In fact, it is estimated that between 50 and 100 million people were killed by that strain of H1N1. One of the things that was unusual about that strain was that, unlike the more typical flu strains, it hit the 20-40 year old age group hard, killing huge numbers of otherwise healthy young adults. Fatalities were not limited to older victims.
I'm not suggesting that this strain of H1N1 will be that virulent or that it will mutate into anything nearly as deadly. However, to deny that the possibility of such a pandemic exists is foolish.

Bureaucracies and government hyping it so they look relevant and the media selling it (they have to talk about something).
Most of us may get H1N1. I read it's supplanting the usual flu strains. I also read it's FAR MILDER than the normal flu strains that kill off thousands of people with weakened immune systems every year in the US and elsewhere. That's what happened in Australia which just went through the flu season. LESS people died than average because it's such a mild strain of influenza.

Got to talk to a few of my friends that went to the doctor and for sure had it. Nearly all of them a fever of about 102 and bad cold symptoms, and were well in 4 days.

I would hardly get all panicky about something that may end up pretty mild.
However, we are due for it and it is certainly possible.
Panicking would change nothing and if I get it, I have no choice.
But like I said, it is possible to be really bad.
