Hall and…Fripp?

Not that surprising, as Hall guested some vocals on Fripp’s album Exposure in 1979, and then after that Fripp worked on a Hall solo album, Sacred Songs, but RCA wasn’t too happy about his involvement.
Hall’s band did an admirable job ripping through “Red”, one of my favorite KC pieces, and Hall’s bluesy piano put a new spin on things, even though it was a little loose in spots. They all continued on, killing it, although Daryl didn’t quite bring it on “Heroes”, but considering everything else, that’s minor. Another fascinating LFDH. And T-Bone’s portrait surveyed it all.

A few months ago I heard a Bill Maher podcast with Hall where he really dissed Oates, I though he was kidding at first, no class! Bands like this and Journey that have had great success, do their legacies no favors by such greedy behavior. Its gross!

It’s nothing new. Bands have had civil wars for years, decades. I’d like to hear Art Garfunkle or Andrew Ridgley’s take on this.

It’s a shame when it happens when people get older. I’m sure folks want to ensure their legacy for their kids and grandkids, but there’s typically more than enough that can go around.

There might be enmities or issues going back years that we’ll never know about, plus, Daryl did all the heavy lifting in the duo anyway. Ultimately, it’s f’d up but I really don’t care.
I was just amused by this musical event, and while H&O meant little to me, Daryl’s show with all the unlikely guests has been fascinating over the years.

I've heard him recently talking about Oates as a purely "business partner" rather than a creative one. I think he was just trying to point out how certain songs were really mainly his. Maybe most of the hits. I'm not sure.

All I know is that I love his music. Especially the music he created with Oates.

Sometimes its hard to quantify, but Hall's most successful work was with Oates, and that says something to me anyway. Like Robbie Robertson it doesn't change my outlook on their artistic output, just shows an unnecessary lack of class to me. Hall is one of the best white soul singers of the last fifty years, that doesn't change. IMHO

Mister Fripp has been having a ball lately taking the stuffing out of his reputation. Those videos of him and his wife doing ACDC and Sabbath tunes are hilarious.
And Darryls show shows what a truly versatile musician he is. Great players getting together for an informal jam! Brilliant!

Relax, I hoped the goofy emoji thingy would show I was joking...

Outwardly it would seem Hall was the driving force. I was never in to them enough to know Oates' contributions to songwriting, and don't really care.
Back in their heyday, I was not at all interested in what they were doing. I have much more respect for it now.

Mr. Hall informed Mr. Oates that his "private eyes are watching you" to which Mr. Oates reportedly responded "I can't go for that".

Oates has songwriting credits on a lot of their big hits, I bet there is a lawsuit coming to challenge that. I don't know if Hall & Oates sold their publishing for the big buyouts like everybody else yet, but if I was a betting man I'd bet that would have something to with what looks like to me, that Hall laying the groundwork for lawsuits to challenge Oates contributions.

I'm talking in general, not in response to your post. I think this whole thing is silly, and only makes Hall look silly. He had no problem being in a partnership that made him millions for a longer period of time than both his marriages, plus his relationship with the woman who was the inspiration for Sara Smile.

I think after a long period of time, unless the other person is actively harming you, you let sleeping dogs lie.

And also her nearly naked working out videos with him playing along beside her. I mean Chr**t on a Sidecar, I really loved Toyah's work back in the day, knew her old man. Local girl done good but what an inauspicious curtain fall for them, both folks in their 60's, both excellent artists and just for a couple of quid off Youtube. Not sure you'd see Siouxie Sue flashing her m*nge for likes on YT, pretty sure about that. Each to their own though.

Fripp’s always had a sense of humor, it’s just under the radar/skewered/dry/British, whatever. I had a very, um, interesting conversation with him once that turned to (after I mentioned my hometown)him bemoning the lack of doors on toilet stalls in the dressing room at an old venue there. The KC gig had been 20 years previous! But the manner in which he told the story was hilarious. You just had to be there.
