Harley Benton Stingray is passive

I just impulse bought a Harley Benton Sringray copy as all my good basses are in another country for a while.

Went with a Stingray so I wasn't buying something I already own a version of, but I didn't realize Stingrays were meant to be active basses. Invalid Link Removedis the bass I bought and it has passive electronics.

Apparently the pickups on a ray are actually passive and it just has an active preamp on there? Does this mean I can replicate the sound of a real stingray by hooking it up to a preamp pedal?

I'm running it through a Behringer Sansamp clone right now and it sounds pretty good when I boost the bass a bit. Have I essentially just moved the active preamp out of the bass itself or is there something different going on with a proper Stingray?

Harley Benton do have an active one for a bit more money but it has a 2nd pickup in the neck position and I'm not sure I would really want that. The lack of a pickup in the neck position makes it really nice to slap on.

I have one of those too. But I'm leaving mine passive. I'm basically a J bass kinda guy and I love the fact that this is wired VVT, just like a J. IOW the 2 coils are wired in parallel. This gives a lot of tonal range for a passive single pickup bass!
