Hartke LH500

I have a new Avatar 2x10 Neo (4-ohm) cab rated at 500 watts. I was thinking of getting the LH1000, and was told that it would be OK to run 1000 watts into that cab IF I just was running it at under 1/2 volume. I was thinking of getting the LH1000 for the extra power for outdoor gigs, and in which case, I would use a second 2x10 cab.

Dumb idea? I don't want to blow up my new cab. From what I'm reading, the LH500 sounds like it might be enough...?

But even when the horn is all the way down it makes hissing noises though it is not as obvious.

Do any of you owners out there have this issue?

I even disconnected my Spector bass to see and it stays the same, so I know it is not my bass.

EDIT: oh and I only have the volume set at about 2.5 and the brite switch is on, though it does it even when it is off, just not as loud.

I wonder if it could be the Avatar cab? I don't have another cab to try though.


EDIT TWO: Update:

I called Zzounds.com and had them send me a new head in exchange and the new head is 80% quieter. So it looks like I will be staying on the Hartke for a while.

Just bought one brand new and had the exact same problem. It was hissing and crackling all over town.
Packed her up and sent it back. Hopefully the new one isn't defective and is a lot quieter.

The LH1000 will give you far more headroom, but if you're running just one 4-ohm 2x10, you will probably want to run it on just one channel - which should give it plenty of juice (running it in bridged mode would yield 1100 watts - far more than you need to run ANY 2x10 cab - although theoretically it would work just fine, IF you listen to how the cab responds and keep strict control of your master volume).

If you add a second 4-ohm 2x10, you'll need to run it on the second channel, as the LH1000 doesn't run at 2 ohms in bridged mode.

The sound at 7:12 min. seems so much different from before that time frame. Is it just because of the amps` equalization or did the bass player in the video change the instruments in between? :help:

Been reading through this thread and it sounds like I would really like this amp. I've actually been messing around with bass through a fender dual showman and I really liked the sound so if this can replicate that as some people have suggested that would be awesome.

My question is about 500 vs 1000 watts...how loud can the lh500 get? I'd like to be easily heard with some room to spare when practicing with drums and two 100 watt tube guitar amps.

The LH500 is plenty loud. I keep up with a miked band and I'm not in the board at all. I'm on noon with the volume control.

I'm playing in a band with two guitarists who each play 100 watt-heads and 4x 12 cabinets. I don't have any trouble with my LH-500 to be heard. My volume is usually set between 10 and 11 O' clock and the guitarists still ask me to turn down my volume level a bit.

The LH500 has a tube front end, and seems to be designed around the old Bassman circuit (class A with a preamp tube). It's very similar to the Alembic preamp... simple bass, mid, treble and a single volume control. The tone controls are that unusual 'Fender' type thing, where flat seems to be bass and treble turned down almost all the way, and the mids up a bit.

I use the previous generation Hartke hybrid head (350w) as a back-up to a Bassman 135 head and it gives a great copy of the Bassman. The solid state preamp gives a nice alternative to the tube pre-amp too.

one thing I found to be well worth doing is replace the 12AX7 with a nice JJ tube, to get a much more valvey and powerful sound.

The earlier Hartke heads gor for less than $250 here in UK too and seem to be very reliable.

Currently considering either
HA500 + 210XL vs Combo HyDrive 115C/210C.
They adds up to almost the same price, I think the combos provides me a gradual introduction to the gigging world (I am very new and just done my first gig 2 weeks ago) but the head/cab seems like a good investment for future expansion. The only shop that sell hartke here is only open on weekdays, which I have to work on :(, so it will take a while before I can try out these two combinations myself.

Any other pros/cons?

I need some help, I can't find a fuse for this thing anywhere.

All the 10 Amp 250v fuse I find are too long, and the closest thing I can get in the right size is only 5 amps!

Anyone know where I can get some fuses at? I've checked radio shack and auto zone
