Harvesting Time - What are you growing?

Herbs do really well in our backyard. We planted some in late April, and have been using them since the middle of May. Mint and cilantro are the ones we use the most.

For produce, we planted three 4x4 braised boxes this year instead of one 16x20 raised bed. Nothing is ready yet, but we have tomatos, a few kinds of peppers, onions, green leaf varieties, and I think some beans.

I love to grow my own garden and grow my own vegetables and food. I love to can, and have fresh produce all year round, if I can't grow it, I get it at a local farmer's market to continue to support my community. I sell my excess vegetables that I am not canning to those in my neighborhood cheap. All this to say, what are you growing this year?

I have about 12 different varieties of tomato plants, German Johnson, Cherry Tomatoes, Mr. Stripey, Australian Reds, Pineapples, Big Boy, Early Girl, Beefsteak, Amish Paradise, Tomatillo, Brandywine

I love hot peppers:

Naga Jolokia, Caribbean Red Habanero, Orange Habanero, Red Chili Peppers, Green Chili Peppers, Jalapenos, Tabasco, Thai Dragon, Cayenne, Serrano, Black Scorpion Tongue, Pimiento, white habanero

Sweet Peppers:

Sweet Banana, Green Bell, Chocolate Bell, Red Bell, Yellow Bell, Orange Bell, Purple Bell, Carmen Peppers, Black Mole

Also:

Crookneck Squash, Straightneck Squash, Butternut Squash, Bush Pickles, Zucchini Squash, Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Japanese Eggplant, String Beans

Herbs:

Thai Basil, Sweet Basil, Cinnamon Basil, Lemon Verbena, Elfish Thyme, Lemon Thyme, Creeping Thyme, Rosemary, Cilantro, Bush Sage, Oregano, Lavender

Working in the garden today I confirm have an excellent crop of extra wild rocket (aka dandelions) only surpassed by my crop of moss.

I don't know what that is and it looks freaky. Kill it. Kill it with fire.

I didn't know what it was either, my wife thought it was just a regular artichoke plant. Turns out that you eat the stems, not the flower. If you take the cut flower in and out of sunlight it reacts instantly, kind of like a sea anemone. So yeah...aliens.

Meanwhile, it's been pushing 95-100 degrees here for most of the last month. I cut the first immature jalapeno the other day and it was just ripping hot already. So we're into fresh salsa season already now, yay!

Ok, we've had an odd year. It rained a lot early and throughout the spring. We got a bit of a late jump on weeding and the chile got overwhelmed, so it's been a tough several weeks trying to catch up. The plants are a bit smaller than they should be at this time due to being buried by the weeds, and we lost a few rows, but overall not too bad of shape. We planted a bunch of onions early (white, yellow and red) and we just harvested about a third of one row. I'll take some more pics today, but still kind of an odd year. No tomatoes yet, and I thought there would be a lot more by now. Anybody got tomatoes?

Yep, I think we're up to four flavors so far, with quite a few Cherokee Purple ones, which are our favorites. The later crop might easily be hosed though. I planted a late second wave, maybe that'll work out. Did the same thing with basil this year too.

Let's see.... Pumpkin, potatoes, onions, cucumber, corn, green peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, string beans, carrots, cabbage, lettuce, strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, paprika, Asian sticky potatoes, various herbs...

And about 60 acres of rice...

Hard to think about getting the dehydrator fired up during all the brutally hot weather we've been having, but hopefully by the time these all come ripe it will have cooled down a bit.

The little ones are Seckel pears, which dry into pure candy slices. I've probably picked around 200 of those so far without even getting the ladder out yet. The Comice and D'Anjous are from the same tree, which IIRC was originally bought as four grafts on a common stem. Every year the mix is a bit different, but the Seckels are usually the most prolific, which is fine by us and the birds that get their share.

Just picked my first of the superheats yesterday afternoon; 7pot Chili!

I also have Habaneros (grow those every season), Poblanos, Lemonpeppers, Scotch Bonnets, Yellow Douglahs, Carolina Reapers, Bhut Assam (Ghost pepper variant), Chocolate Trinidad Scorpions, Yellow Scorpians, Jalapeños, Chichimeccas, 7pot Brain Strain...I think that is about it.

Awesome man. Picked my first fully red Thai chili a couple of days ago, have a couple dozen Habs within a few days of ready, plenty of Jals, and Ghosts just finally starting to set fruit.

Also harvesting first of the Thai and Lime basil this week, good times. At least some things thrive in the abnormal heat.
