Made the rounds .... bought a Boom Bass 1215 cabinet for almost nothing. They had no idea what it was, and it'd been on layaway forever, so it was on the big big markdown.... and then I talked them down some more !
Cabinet..... 30 day warrantee ... tax ......
........... $107 !!!! (They sell at MF for like $1200)
And it's in great shape... no tolex tears, just a nice cab ! Sounds incredible...... it'd been in the back since 2017 , they'd forgotten it !!!

Too bad most pawns are the repository for moving stolen goods.
Perusal of their records usually find questionable, a.k.a. STOLEN equipment doesn't follow the same rules as legitimate goods.
The punishment, usually a fine, nothing else.
The shop that bought the stuff stolen from my house, had incomplete records, a fine, did not wait the approved time before selling, another fine and had no idea who they sold it to. Stuff was stolen in a smash and grab at 10:15am and at the pawn shop and sold before 11:30am the same day. Supposedly lunchtime is when someone came in and bought the stuff. Again, illegal to sell before the time period but he thought this guy was worthy, but didn't know him? Huh?
They paid low, sold high and the fines didn't make a dent in the profit thay made that day on my stuff AND they are still in business.
For obvious reasons, I don't use pawn shops.
I expect kharma will visit you in the future, seems only right.
Except for the fact that the pawnshop had the cabinet since 2017, more than enough time for any police reports to be filed...And I am extremely active in the Austin musician community, and very likely would've heard about this cabinet being stolen from a musician or band in the Central Texas area. It also went through several price reductions during that time. If I thought there was an actual chance it was stolen, no I wouldn't have purchased it. But No police report was filed, me and none of the people that I deal with, which is close to 1000 musicians in the Austin and Central Texas Area had one stolen. Not saying that I am infallible by any means. However, I truly believe that this was not stolen. It was sold by the pawnshop for well under cost. They had already written it off, I saw the screen.

By the way, I have had a 1963 and a 1974 jazz bass stolen from me at the same time, and $10,000 worth of rack gear including Avalon and eventide stuff. So there's no real need to lecture me about stolen gear and how much it sucks. I would not have even touched this if I thought it was hot.

My experiences are different.
I retract the kharma remark, my bad.
I just refuse to deal with that element, the business and the way its run is fraught with fraud and deception.
Towns that allow these businesses have more power in their hands than they realize. Towns could require a chain of possession via photo licenses being copied.
When you realizes the odds of finding anyone's equipment at a pawn shop based on the way the business is structured to obfuscate the trail, you realize the issues are self imposed and the town's can change that.
Don't worry - someone will be along to lecture you about how your gear was stolen because you're irresponsible.
I understand your reasons for not wanting to use them personally. Lots of people do use them. I've used them for loans and lost gear, but in the end they perform a service. And some people take advantage of that service in bad ways, some people use it the way it's intended. And yeah, there are plenty of sketchy pawnshops and people working in owning pawn shops that's for sure. There are also some good people that own them. Just like many things, there are good and bad. Sucks that you had bad experiences with them, I know several people that have had poor experiences with them. I've only had good experiences with them personally, that's in about 30- 35 years of frequenting them. Never had anything come up stolen that I've purchased, and many of these guys can tell you I purchase a lot of things at pawnshops. But again, I know people who have found their hot gear at pawnshops, so it does happen.
By the way, here in Austin anytime that you pawn gear its required to show drivers license. They make a copy of it.
And if you're purchasing gear with a debit or credit card....and in some shops any kind of purchase (including cash)....you have to have a valid drivers license.
I've never gotten a deal in a pwn shop. I don't even bother looking anymore.
In Massachusetts all stores selling used goods like instruments or whatever, even Guitar Centers have a hold time and require you to show a license when selling. The one nice thing for the purchaser is that they can put it out and you can put money down on something right away. They will hold it for you until the hold time is up. For those that have goods stolen they have to send a list with descriptions to local police or the county sheriff with serial numbers and stuff, so they can go through their database. Around here, you are more likely to receive stolen property from something like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist than a pawn shop or a used instrument store.
All that aside, how does that cab sound? It's pretty cool looking. I love the Pbass as well. Great scores!
Same here. Although back in the early 80's I found a few great deals on early 70's P-Basses, and I snatched up two of them.
But in those days CBS-era Fenders weren't collectible. The prices they're selling for today blows my mind.
In today's world, Pawn Shops typically know the current "Blue Book" value on the items they have in inventory.
