My sterling is named piezo and my friend dubbed my mike dirnt 'mike oxlong' (just try saying that out loud!)
It's lame enough for every Navy on record, its lame enough for Astronauts, well hell, its lame enough for me.
I'd invite you to take a spin in my truck sometime and see if it doesn't have a womans personality all its own, but I think that people who don't understand it just don't understand it. I just don't see it as inanimate.

My Cirrus 6 is named Boris. I'm sure y'all get the reference.

I call my SX "Cheapie".. Because, well.. It was cheap. There's no "he" or "she" connotation there, I just refer to it as "Cheapie". For some reason, it bothers me less than saying "SX".
I once owned a Gibson BB King "Lucille" Gibson now has out a Billy Gibbons "Pearly Gates" Les Paul
Never had an SRV #1 or Eric Clapton "Blackie" Strat.
However I did meet Albert King once and got to play on his "Lucy" Flying V
I have never named a bass ... but they sometimes take on names, as in this bass my guitar player calls the "Jimi" Jazz
... For me it's the blue one or the sunburst one, sometimes the red one.

My Ric is "Old Reliable", because it's my first and I bought it new in 1981. My Fender Jazz is "Sassy Bitch" because it's tone and looks are so in your face.The Fender Precision is "Grand Theft Precision" because I stole it for only $100 on CL. I haven't yet named my Squier VMF (a name hasn't yet emerged) or my 5er (I dunno which one of the two I'm going to keep yet - (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=564999)
I named my Status basses.
Left - S2, Miss Maple (quilted maple top)
Right - Series 2000, The MP (used to belong to Mike Porcaro)
