Hawaii Bassists?

Katfish,

Besides Easy Music, there's also Good Guys Music in Kapahulu (very cramped quarters, but nice guys and one of the owners used to work at Easy years ago). I also go to Dan's Guitars regularly (I've actually bought most of my current Bass Gear from him). He's on the corner of Beretania and McCully next to Connie Gayle Beauty Salon). If you're in the Central/North Shore area, check Hawaii Music Supply in Wahiawa (used to be in Kaneohe). Those are the "best" choices IMHO, there are other smaller stores around Oahu as well...

Aloha,
Nate

^ Right on, Mahalos Nate!

When I used to live in Waikes, I went to Good Guys music to get a Ukulele I think. Didn't realize they had other instruments..then again, I wasn't looking for anything else lol..I'll check Good Guys and Dan's next time I go Oahu. Been ono for Kapahulu's Poi Factory lunch anyway. NO places on Kauai makes Pipikala...

Here music store wise, there's Scotty's in Kalaheo (which I'm close to) and Kauai music and sound in Kapaa. Now I'm not gonna bash anyone, but I haven't had the best experience at Scotty's. Some of his staff is great (one of the braddas there played at my Child's first luau, too bad I wasn't into learning music then lol) but the owner himself reminds me of the son on that TV Show "Hardcore Pawn"..in fact he reminds me of the dad sometimes lol.

Kauai Music and Sound just moved to a bigger location now, they have a studio on site and carry new and used, plus take trade in's...I'm debating if I want to trade in my sax or not for a nice Ibanez I saw (if the value is worth that much)

That's if anyone is planning to visit the Garden Isle there's your two choices (there's an Ukulele store in Koloa, but I think that's all they carry) also if you are planning ask me about where to stay ;)

When I gig on Kauai, I usually stop there, it used to be owned by Bounty Music here on Maui. I haven't been to the new location yet, but I will when I'm over there next.

Anyone been to Dan's guitars on Oahu? They had a good selection of Music Man basses the last time I stopped in. It was a few years ago though. I wanted to try an Ampeg SVT CL but they didn't have one out front and were too busy to dig it out and set it up. I did get to try out a Stingray though.

Glad to see Christian found this thread. I was going to point him out to everyone.

He's a wicked-bad-rear-end (sorry, keeping with the no profanity rule) talented bassist and my friend, and he's from Hilo as he pointed out.

Who cares that he lives in Vegas currently? You can take the man from the islands, but you can't take the islands out of the man.

Right Chris?

hahah, thanks JP!

Sweet info! Ill check out your band info when I get home (on mobile right now) and right on about Ho'omau!

Thing is im into metal myself and I look nowhere near what would be considered a metal fan. I actullay wrote/sung a few metal songs for a low budget movie out here. I just started playing bass for my church about 4 months ago (using their very heavy Fender P)..so yes I suck lol but I enjoy it. Just bought an used ArborAB400 from my friend who plays in a local band called Tribal Redemption. Think he overcharged me for it (150 with case and new strap) but he's throwing in lessons, so I guess thats okay lol

150 and lessons cant really go wrong? One thing I remember from buying stuff in hawaii... gear is USUALLY always over priced because of lack of options... at least on maui that is... especially cabs!! I wish there was more neo speaker cabs when I lived there, shipping was insane.

I just did a show last nite at Hard Rock here in vegas and one of the security guys was a from hawaii.. he was the one taking us up the elevator and stuff.. on the ride up he stops and ask me if im from hawaii? after I tell him yes, he immediately breaks out of "professional" mode and starts talking pidgin and asking what part im from hahah. went from "Not a problem, sir!" to "ehhh braddah, no worries, i'll take care of it!" :bassist:

definitely hope hes working next month when we're back haha.

Hahaha cool story. It ain't called the 9th Island for nothing. Never really feel like a fish outta water there...

and yea I gave that bass back (and got a refund) it played fine at home but when I took it to church to play the sound was terrible and it was uncomfortable. Not a big fan of Arbors now...K music and sound had some used Ibanez that looked great...might save up for one of them

I'm going to Maui in August so any of you Maui guy's Band play anywhere near La Haina? I met a Bassist playing with a Hawaiian Band at our timeshare, Kaanapali Beach Club, a few years ago and he told me a couple of places that had good live bands and he gave me his card but I lost it. There's a soloist guitarist at Cheeseburger in Paradise but he wasn't too good.

Hi guys,
Maybe someone out there can help out a fellow bassist with some info. I've only been living in Hawaii (big island) for 5 years. The group I'm currently working with has hit the wall as far as getting any work off island. We are a jazz trio and we perform at Boston Basils in Kona once a month, and have done a few gigs up at the Blue Dragon. We had a standing gig in Hilo for awhile until the club changed hands. I realize the jazz scene in Honolulu is limited, but we have been unable to even get a polite no out of anyone. Are there any booking agents that we should be talking with? I am originally from central NY (Syracuse/Utica area) and that was the main way things were done back there. I know, this isn't the mainland. That is why I am asking. Any insight would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Frank Musacchio
P.S. the band: Invalid Link Removed You can sample our cd there.

The only one I know of is Musical Options, who provide all kinds of entertainment to the event/convention business (which I work in).

Entertainment Options Hawai'i- Entertainment Agency for the Hawaiian Islands

I know that we get a lot of our bands through this service.

You could also go straight to DMC services themselves, such as Mary Charles and Associates, Panache Destination Management (us), Envisions, etc. Even though things are slow now and times are tough, Hawaii is still a great destination management locale.

Another one here. More of a hobby than anything else, but a very
enjoyable one. The guy posting here as Nate, I wonder if it's Nate
Aweau. If that's you, I never knew you played 7 strings like that.
I am totally in awe. Saw a You Tube video and was blown away.
