Of course... subjective.... that would all depend on the person's definition of Heavy....
Deep Purple were heavy many years ago... Black Sabbath has some of the most evil and heavy songs out there as well.. the links I posted are what I enjoy listening to if I am in the mood for something extremely heavy
Heaviest? Mastodon throws it down right and proper..... But, of the 100's of bands I've seen perform live, I've *NEVER* seen anyone *MOVE* an audience like Flogging Molly. They're not a particularly heavy band in the "metal" sense of the word, but in terms of joyful noise and mayhem, they're untouchable.
Deathklok is pretty killer.
Some nu-metal bands I love love love that are pretty good: August Burns Red (not super fast but great break downs)
Conducting From the Grave ( super technical pretty heavy IMO)
Whitechapel
In Flames
Job For A Cowboy (these guys are insane)
Thats all I can think off the top of my head. Just gotta find the right songs and they are great.
Flogging Molly... so true. Only people I've ever seen move an audience except for Lamb Of God..... The wall of Death is scary scary stuff.
The original Exciter does it for me. Three guys, and truly head banging goodness. Violence and force, and the follow up Long Live The Loud are classics.
Well, a lot of people define heavy differently. Some may find brutal death metal bands fit their definition of heavy, or Grindcore as the heaviest. But for "heavy", just total powerful brain destruction... I'm gonna say look up Electric Wizard and Sunn O))), also Mortician (yes I know its Grindcore.)
Fast? Necrophagist is fast! First band I ever listened to that made me want to air bass, they're excellent!
