Nobody has mentioned Pelican yet. Just saw them blow Isis off the stage. imho. And on the newest album they have been writing with Earth's Dylan Carlson.

2002? I thought metalcore was just the most obvious aspects of what Converge was doing in 1992.
Yeah, as were bands like Botch, Coalesce, and Zao...
BUT... the whole At The Gates worship which i am reffering to really started to bud in the early 2000s. Before, "metalcore" was just that... metal influenced hardcore bands. But the overt and obvious Swedish Death Metal thing was a whole new beast that brought with it the entire annoying fashion-forward subculture that gets associated with the term "metalcore" today.
See, when i hear Metalcore... i think Converge, Botch, Training for Utopia, Undertow and All Out War... the kiddies today would say As I Lay Dieing, August Burns Red, and The Agony Scene.
Things change man. Same thing with "screamo"... throw that word at me i think Heroin, Indian Summer, Clikitat Ikatowi, and Antioch Arrow. Someone else would say Orchid, Pg 99 and Satia... still, someone else would say Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, or whatever.
All in a name man.

Meshuggah - Catch 33 is an awesome mind-unraveling album. Chaosphere is pretty sick too.
It's funny about heavy/brutal. To me tuning is a big issue. I just can't see an E-tuned band being that brutal. Maybe in like 1983. Gojira - From Mars to Serius is a good heavy album too (drop D).
Sometimes it's so "brutal" I can't really make out many of the notes.

Floor > Torche
I love Torche, don't get me wrong. I may even like them MORE than Floor... but Floor was a much MUCH heavier band.
Seriously though, the song "Healer" should definatly earn credit for being the catchiest "Heavy" song out there...
I've seen Sabbath, Priest, Deep Purple, Motorhead and others listed many times. I have to admit that I haven't seen many of the newer bands listed, but then again, most of it doesn't appeal to me.
For my money, Black Sabbath is the tops when it comes to being heavy and dark, while still being listenable, IMHO. Take the song "Under the Sun" from Volume 4. It sounds like a funeral durge for the first 30 seconds or so. I have requested it to be played at my funeral.

they were 30 years ago, they aren't anymore. There are plenty of "listenable" bands that are much heavier than sabbath now. Its a constant race to see who can be heavier; sabbath's horse died a while ago.
i find Impending Doom or Nile have some pretty sick, heavy music. listen to Nailed. Dead. Risen. by impending doom, its insane
