heaviest band ever

And, my pick for the heaviest band ever, a big influence on Godflesh and thus a pretty big amount of a lot of modern bands... early SWANS. SWANS isn't even metal, but when it comes to intensity, their early stuff wins hands down against any band EVER. Give their song 'Raping A Slave' a try.

A big +1 to this! Even though not conventionally metal, SWANS are as intense as it comes.

Another prime example:

August Burns Red (like said earlier good breakdowns with some musical awesomeness)
Between the Buried and Me (Musical composures of epic proportions)
Job For A Cowboy (Insane..)
Evading The Grave (Not uber heavy but it deserves a spot)
We Butter the Bread With Butter (wir Butter das Brot mit Butter) (EXTREMMM!!! lol listen to that song)
White Chapel (hmm..)

I saw the Swans backing up Foetus in the early '90s, just about the same time that my band was practicing down the hall from Sleep. Both very heavy, no doubt, but I still can't believe nobody here is giving props to the mighty Melvins!

Yes, early Sabbath and Blue Cheer take top honors and Flipper can still melt your ears, but the Melvins have been turning out heavy after heavy for 25 years! Props!

I didn't even think about Swans with this thread, but yes, they definitely fit. One of the very, very few bands that I would consider eligible for the unholy status of Best. Band. Ever.

I also suppose this would be a good time to mention Oxbow, Old Man Gloom, maudlin of the Well, and Acid Bath. I'll also nod my head toward Melvins in solemn agreement, they are nearly as important as Sabbath when it comes to such things.

at the gates

I love At the Gates... but i hate them for unknowingly spawning the crap that's been dubbed "metalcore".

"Hey bro... check out this band i just found!"(it's really 2002)

"Woah what are they called man?"

"At the Gates."

"Woot. We should play something like this"

"Like? We can just COPY the riffs and the parts that we can't play we'll just jam on the open E while our friends practice thier kickboxing moves."

"Hella sweet man!"

"Lets go to Express and buy girl jeans now!"

"Woot, i got my mom's credit card!!1"

*bro hi-five*
