Heavy Metal Jazz???

You could also try Apocalyptica (I think thats the right name). It's four cellos playing Metallica songs. Its really cool.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Cynic" - Death/pesudo-industrial with a large amount of jazz influence in the form of Sean Malone.

I'd tend to agree, though. Some standout tracks (both bass-wise and as a whole) on "Inertia."

How about Attention Deficit? They are the power trio consisting of Michael Manring on bass, Alex Skolnick on guitar, and I believe Primus's drummer. Alex Skolnick used to play guitar for thrash metal band Testament.
I've only heard one of their songs, but the song I heard was dark and had some elements of heaviness. Michael Manring's playing is always interesting and evokes a lot of moods. Alex Skolnick is a metal player turned fusion player, but I'm sure there are definitely elements of metal in his playing. His tone is certainly pretty heavy.
Then again, I only heard one of their songs, so perhaps someone else might be in a better position to comment.

If you take into consideration that "Heavy Metal Jazz" could be a few different things, I think AD is right on the mark. I have two CD's of theirs and they are a heavier fusion type thing, IMO anyway.
Sorry for resurecting such an old thread, but I've just recieved the Alex Skolnick Trio CD and it's absolutely KILLER! Fant-blimming-tastic guitar, bass and drum playing from the guys (Guitar - Alex Skolnick, Bass - John Graham Davis, Drums - Matt Zebroski) playing "classic" heavy metals tunes in a jazz stylee.

if you like that, you should check out alex's current group "theory of ruin" damn good stuff. the drummer is absolutely killer. he has a little jazz duo called "good for cows"... my guitar player used to share a rehearsal space with all those cats over in oakland.

Actually, Alex Skolnick isn't in Theory of Ruin. That's Alex Newport of Fudge Tunnel's new band. They do kick major ass though!! Their new stuff is out on Escape Artist Records. I highly recommend it!!
Erm... I took a little listen to some Theory of Ruin stuff at their website. It's not really my cup of tea. It's also not really anything like the Alex Skolnick Trio... Sorry guys. I'm coming to this stuff from the Michael Manring -> Attention Deficit -> Alex Skolnick direction. I guess more emphasis on jazz than heavy me(n)tal.

I just had to add Arcana. Be careful, there are two bands both with same name - the one I am talking about is basically Bill Laswell and the late great Tony Williams on drums. The first album I think is called "The Last Wave" and has Derek Bailey on guitar and is totally out there. The second album is called "Arc of the Testimony" and is the one I'm recommending - Buckethead is on some of the tracks and Pharoah Saunders on others.
Oh yeah, of course, THE TONY WILLIAMS LIFETIME!!! The Tony Williams/Miles Davis connection is significant here. The first album "Emergency!" is Tony Williams, Larry Young, and John McLaughlin, and this gets really close to heavy metal in places. You must check out this album, even though there's no bass player!!! (Larry Young fills in admirably) The second album, "Turn It Over," adds Jack Bruce on bass, what more can you ask for? After that things get much less heavy, but the recent compilation "Spectrum: The Anthology" collects a lot of the best tracks from these two albums plus tracks from some of the later ones.
Slam mentioned Miles's own electric period and I have to agree - I love "Live Evil" and "Agartha" and "Dark Magus" - African Space Funk Metal at its best! Pete Cosey is amazing!!! Also "Pangaea" "On the Corner" "Bitches Brew" "Black Beauty" though they are less 'metal'...

I have always loved Alex Skolnick. (though I think James Murphy was an excellent replacement in Testament) I espcially love how he mixed shredding with some tasteful blues-based playing when he was in Savatage.

Cynic is easily the best combination with jazz/fusion and metal. Thoose guys are brilliant.

Atheist are the ones who started the death jazz thing, their music is godly eventhough the jazz influences are fewer.
Red Tide, somewhat uknown but a good death jazz band overall.
Coprofago, sounds alot like meshuggah but with some very jazzy sections and the bassplayer throws in some walking basslines and small solos which is pretty rare for this kind of band.

Check out Gordian Knot (started by Sean Malone after Cynic). Yakuza has a lot of free jazz and fusion influence and the vocalist plays sax on a few songs. It's actually pretty interesting.
