Heavy Metal Jazz???

Canderia is a perfect blend of grindcore and jazz with awesome jazz breaks and then Carley Comas viscious growl
Two genuine heavy metal Jazz albums that you MUST own:
John Zorn (Electric Masada) - At the Moutains of Madness
Bohren and the Club De Gore - Black Earth
Both are true jazz and also as metal as you need - although the Black Earth album is laid back, its also heavy as hell!

Granted this is a very old thread, these are the bands I found when I went looking for metal with a jazzy horn section.

Not exactly metal, but I'm suprised that no one has mentioned Mars Volta yet. They play a lot of odd time signatures and disjointed melodies. Some would call them "progressive", but they definitely have an "edge", or a darkness to the music unlike say, Rush, who I associate as being the prototype "progressive rock" band. I'd put Mars Volta a few notches above Dream Theatre in terms of edginess as well.
I was just listening to the Frances the Mute album the other day and I was really digging the bass playing by Juan Alderete. He tastefully rips off some of Tim Commerford's licks and tone from his Rage days on one song in particular. Don't ask me which one, as the tracks are named and layed out rather cryptically. But that dirty wah sound is what I'm talking about. As much as people on these boards obsess about figuring out Commerford's tonal secrets, Alderete seems to have nailed the dirty wah on that one track at least.
And another band that I like for their jazz-styled compositions is Radiohead. Definitely not metal, but edgy and dark nonetheless... Thom Yorke created his own genre in my opinion.
And just to substantiate my jazz credentials, I own and regularly listen to over 300 jazz albums, by artists such as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Kenny Burrell, Cannonball Adderly, Hank Mobley, Dave Brubeck, Wes Montgomery, Weather Report & Jaco, Pat Metheny (best live performance I've seen in my life, and I've been to countless hundreds of shows and festivals), Bireli Lagrene, Dave Holland, etc. just to name a few of my favorites.
I'm looking forward to checking out some of the suggestions that you guys have made!

Definitely check out The Mars Volta. They're like a prog rock/metal orchestra... Very intense, and very good. Frances the Mute had more of a jazzy feel than their other albums as well, I thought.

Well, an organ/bass/drum combo did improvisations over Sabbath tunes on an album called Kind of Black...but I can't for the life of me remember what the group was called. It sure sounds awesome though.
So far of the stuff mentioned I haven't anything I would call Jazz. I heard a lot of Rock with Fusion mixed in, but thats not Jazz that Fusion. IMO the closest thing and still not Metal would be Weather Report. Brecker Brother had some borderline stuff.
What do you really want Metal with sophisticated chords and progressions, some odd meters? Bebop licks played loud in straight eights? Fusion has all that, hence the name, a fusion of Jazz, Rock, and other music.

My first thought was dillinger escape plan and mr bungle too - maybe a lot of Mike Patton too. Dpends if your talking about metal jazz, or jazz metal.........(jeez - did I just say that?)

I second this recommendation. I also recommend Mephistopheles. Both of these bands have a clear jazz influence/jazz parts, and are not just moderately technical metal as almost all of the other recommendations are. Many other recommendations aren't even close to metal.
