Heckled....by the Restaurant/Bar Owner!?! Long Rant

One point that hasn't been mentioned is the fact that the owner is getting drunk at an establishment that is supposed to quit serving anyone who is getting inebriated. Even though he is the owner, if he goes out a kills someone, the bar has some responsibility. The manager needs to sit down with the owner and explain how the owner is jeopardizing his own establishment. Sounds like the owner is his worst enemy.

Yeah, we actually did try that last time. He wants a steady stream of ZZ Top, Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Foghat, etc. Look, I have NOTHING against any of those artists and wouldn't mind playing them. They are not part of what we usually do and the few that we did, most people could have cared less. The demographic of this place does not suit what the owner thinks we should play.

Yeah, but he's the one who is paying the band. Nothing wrong with not wanting to do those songs, or any other songs the owner wants. But, if you want it to be a regular gig, you have to give some.

I would recommend that your BL sit down with the owner and manager and find out what they want; see what kind of adjustments the band can make to find a happy medium.

Wow I appreciate everyone's ideas!! Sometimes I get stuck in my head with one way of thinking about a situation that I can't see other alternatives. Either way, the gig must go on (at least the one this Saturday) so my main goal is to not get in a fight with a drunk.

How about see if you can remember a few of the songs he names and rehearse them enough to pull them out next gig.

Let's ask one simple question here. How may of you would tolerate a bandmate's significant other/BF/GF interrupting a show? I'm guessing few if any.

Now how does being a bar owner get this guy a pass? While he may be paying for the gig it's still an incredible distraction from what you've stated as being more work then hobby.

Before the gig you may want to (very) diplomatically talk to the owner while he's still sober enough to understand just how badly he caused things to go sideways. If you can't come to an understanding then let some other band have the headache.

Playing some large dance hall in South Texas back around '76... the old geezer owner loved us and the crowd that showed up was into the high hundreds I'm guessing. All was going well until the owner got sloshed and spotted one of our crew, an African-American gentleman. The owner stewed over this for a set or two until his own evil whiskey twin took over and he shut down a perfectly good gig with enormous volumes of alcohol sales and chased us out with a shotgun. The patrons cleared out as well. This was a one-off gig we'd never played before. I can't recall the name or exact location after 40 years but I can sure remember the events.

Needless to say, we haven't exactly learned a lot of new 70s tunes.
learn 4-6 easy 70s tunes in case the wino turns on you again so you have something to calm him down. give the a**hole what he wants by shoving his damn 70s tunes down his throat. by the time you've played 4 songs, he'll be too drunk to notice the rest of your set. placate the alcoholic until he has to be carried out of the place and have a laugh when you see him stumbling all over the bar while you take his money.

"we'd like to dedicate another 70s hit to the owner. thank you very much sir, have another drink on us"

...and he falls flat on his face. that's the only way to deal with drunks.

Learn some 70's tunes, play your normal set until he asks you to play some 70's tunes, then, announce loudly that the next song you're playing is for the owner and launch into it. Pacify his drunken ego. I can't imagine it would happen more than a couple times a night. Drunks are annoying but they're also easily distracted and can't maintain focus for the entire 4 hours you're playing.

Not only announce that but ask the drunk to come up to the stage and sing it. Make sure to video it, and have a friend post it to YouTube - let social media take over. Make sure to let the manager and owner have a link to the video.

He's the owner and can do as he wishes. Too bad if that ruffles the sensibilities of some of you.
I'd rather play at a bar where the owner is out having fun with the clients than someone who would rather be somewhere else and I'd guess his enthusiasm contributes to the good times.
Sounds like a fun gig to me :)
