Hell just froze over...chorus content

I have the MXR BCD and do experience the signal boosting issue. As you mentioned, it is pretty minor, but in certain tunes I've found it to push my signal just enough, especially if combined with some sort of distortion, that I jump out of the mix more than I would like. I try to simply play with a lighter touch in those instances and that does the trick. I hate the flanger and X-over functions on that pedal. The flanger sounds cheesy, and the X-over basically makes the chorus sound too subtle to be heard in a mix. Good pedal, but not a great pedal.

I tried an Iron Ether Polytope, but I couldn't get along with it. Much better for whacky sounds than traditional ones. It could do them, but I thought my MXR did them better.

My absolute favorite is the Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus. It sounds FABULOUS. It's probably too big of a pedal for your needs, which would rule it out.
Definitely. Really trying to avoid big pedals anymore. I have one that's still on my board, and that's enough. MXR sized boxes are big enough in most cases. I've seen enough reductions of bigger pedals to know that it can be done, so why they're not doing it, I don't know.

Have to disagree about the flanger in the BCD, though. Didn't care for it at fast speeds, but slow it down and it becomes a little glitchy in a way I find very cool.

I tried the TC Corona and thought it was really nice. I ended up not getting it as I could only think of a couple uses for it. I, too, think dated bass when I hear chorus which is too bad as it is a nice effect.

I'm guessing Tech 21 has it in the larger box because a lot of their pedals are in that sized box which lends itself to more economical manufacturing. They also tend to like the "knobs all in a line" form factor.

As for the flanger: If you find a sound you like with it, that's great. I could never get along with it and it's remained off basically forever.

I love the JAM Waterfall. Beautiful, very musical sounding pedal. It's even got a great vibrato switch that can really add something nice. Check my disclosure though, I'm a bit biased I guess. But I played and loved the pedal before the endorsement.

You can hear it mixed in with the JAM Red Muck on this track. It comes to life around the 30 second mark with the vibrato switch flipped -

And you can hear it blended in and adding some sheen on this track -

May not be to everyone's taste, but you can get an idea of what it could add.

Kool!
Thanks!

+1 for Jam Pedals Waterfall. The perfect chorus pedal (except for the price!). Very musical chorus settings and the enclosure is on the small side.
Used ones can be had for under $200.
This is the chorus for people who don't like chorus.

For years I have hated chorus. Loved it at first...finally a modulation effect that sounded good on bass without washing you out of the mix. Had a Boss CE-3 for years and it got a ton of use in the 80's.

I like using my CE-3 on occasional recordings but I've never been a huge fan of chorus (CE-3 or others) as a "live" effect.

For anyone into multi-fx units, the DigiTech Bass Whammy reissue has two pretty solid chorus settings in it.

I can't believe nobody mentions the Analogman anymore. Pure classic!

I did post some vids suggesting the Analogman on pg 1 of the thread. Now, that said, when I was on a chorus search last year, I A/B'd the Analogman right beside the TC Corona (mini), and for me it was an incredibly easy choice - the Corona won that competition hands down. I should note that I owned an TC SCF for almost 20 years, so it probably was an easy place for me to "go home to" with the Corona. I think the Corona is all about picking the right TonePrints and, ultimately, getting into the editor and learning how to use that.

I ended up ditching the Corona Mini in favour of an SA Orbital, so that I could expand my functionality into other forms of modulation but still just have the one pedal (and two presets!), and the Orbital is serving me well, no complaints. :)

These days I find chorus work well after filter, octave and distortion effects for synth sounds, or as a wide stereo chorus with low rate for making the sound seem big (especially for fretless). Back in my early Cocteau Twins wannabe phase it was chorus and flange on everything apart from my cornflakes.

I will say MXR really has brought a solid line of bass effects to the world that are smaller sized. I am making a new mini pedalboard for one of my cover bands that will consist of polytune nano, MXR Bass Distortion, MXR Envelope Filter, MXR Chorus (haven't decided which one), Boss OC-2 (possibly). That should help me fill in some space with a 3 piece.

The MXR EVH phaser is really really nice with bass too...

The red Muck is a distortion pedal?

Jimmy, not sure how fond you are of tinkering.... but I recently got the tc electronic corona mini. Straight out of the box it sounded kinda meh. After messing with the toneprint editor a bit I was impressed enough that I bought the hall of fame mini and the flashback mini for my pedal steel rig.

HA - I was so impressed with the Vortex & Flashback; I got the Corona :D

It's mellower than what I was expecting considering how rad the Vortex sounds, but after carefully reading the Toneprint manual - I got in there and turned the depth up to %100, and it sounds much better now!!!

If I had to do it again - I would have went with the Vortex & Corona Mini's because the controls that were left off of the Mini's weren't all that vital to their sound.

Retro-Sonic's is a copy of the original Roland/Boss CE-1, very nice sounding, a friend had one.

Not sure why so many people are recommending big boxes when the OP specified 1590a.

If that's the case...

@JimmyM : Diamond Halo Chorus... it's a just a few 1590a boxes but together as one. ;)

Back to the OP requirements...

Joyo: "The Invalid Link Removed is a subtle analog chorus that never sounds „too much“. even in extrem settings, every sound you dial in stays fully usable. So if you are looking for crazy, wobbly chorus sounds, keep looking, but if you need a beautifully transparent chorus that works in many situations, the FUTURE CHORUS is for you."
