Hello From Jeff Berlin

Hi Jeff,

I first met you in 1984 at BIT when it was still above the wax museum... one of the early clinics with you, and Jaco Pastorious. Looking back, i would have to classify it as a magical time for bass, and my life. Thank you for your always gracious sharing of information, heading me in a great direction of life-long learning.

I am currently studying with one of the many proteges, like you, of Chaflie Banacos. Would you plesse after all these years provide a glimpse into what made Charlie and his method so influential?

Hope all is well with you, your career, family, etc...

Jim

It is a pleasure to have this new opportunity to chat with people on Talkbass about learning how to play better. Being back in this forum is a marvelous thing. It allows me to share thoughts about learning the bass in ways that I have learned and researched over many years. If learning well is an interest you have, please chime in and say hello.

Best regards to all from Jeff
Would love to hear from you and welcome back Mr. Berlin!

Hi Jeff, took a lesson from you back in SW Florida a few years ago. Look forward to seeing you around here.

Hi Jim. Charlie was only one of a long line of teachers that only used musical content to help me to improve my playing. Charlie's brilliance was that he could identify the weak elements of all his students in a moment and prescribe certain harmonic music for us to practice to fix it. Charlie created more incredible musical exercises designed not to improve our art but to improve our understanding of music on the bass. This approach worked so well that I don't believe that I would be the player or the teacher that I am without Charlie's influence in my life.

Hello, Mr. Berlin. I was watching some live Yes stuff on YouTube and saw you had done a few gigs with them. Someone commented that you pretty much just sight read the whole time as you weren't familiar with their music. I thought that was pretty awesome!

What projects are you working on these days?
Once the guitar has been laid down, my only single, Joe Frazier Rd. 3 will be finished. I am anxious to start my tribute to my hero Jack Bruce and have already arranged around 12 of his songs. Plus, I gathered a fairly extensive list of great classical works and am arranging them so that my bass can fit into them but in a musical manner. Finally, my reading lessons are done and will be promoted starting next year.
