Don't know, the seller says it's handmade in 1978 from Koa and that's about all the info there is. Back of the headstock is stamped Corwin

Help me decide… this or a Wal?

It looks almost like an Alembic until you get to the headstock. On sight it offers no competition to the Wal for me but I would have to play them both in a live performance situation for "feel and sound" qualities to really know. I've never played a Wal but I would expect to choose it after the live playing test.
Going off looks alone it’s a tough call. “It’s what’s on the inside that counts” has always seemed like an apropos statement to me where Wals are concerned. 
No, but it is an early Alembic brass bridge. Overall, it's pretty cool with those super early EMGs and Schaller tuners.
Will the Wal in question be ordered new or will it be also a vintage model?
The waiting period for a new Wal pretty much makes it a bad gift for retirement,
and you could do both - buy this one and order a Wal. While you wait on the good people at Wal to finish your instrument, you can enjoy this one and when the time comes, you'll quickly sell this one to the next person.
Unless of course you're so deep in love with it that you don't want your Wal any more.

Yep, see Lee Sklar's custom P-bass. He got them installed when Rob Turner first made them:
no it won't... the ship sailed on any Wal, even one that is beat to crap.. being under $8-9K ever... Good condition with some options is $10-$12K easily.. Paul is backed up past 4 years and not even taking orders anymore.. the law of Supply and Demand is in effect and not likely to get suspended anytime soon.

It's gone so crazy I have literally no idea what my old Pro 1 is worth these days. To think I passed on a nice Mk1 at £3k (UKP) just a couple of years back.
same is true for Rolex watches, Porsche 911's and a dozen other luxury items I can think of off the top of my head... heck, even an Aguilar DB751 amp is going for more than retail new for a 5 year old used one now..
I have an order placed with Wal so I am fully aware of the circumstances, however I think you need to look harder and more diligently for good deals before claiming they don’t exist. For instance:
This bass just sold for $6,850 a few months ago.
This one sold for $7,700 earlier this year. (I actually bought it but the seller screwed up the shipping so I got refunded and he sold to someone local)
There’s another 90s mk2 five string that sold for around 6.8-7k but the listing is expired, it sold a few months ago.
So don’t give me this stuff about no bass ever selling for less than 8-9k ever. They do, just not if you’re buying them from resident flipper/price inflator “guitar chimp”.
A "Few" months ago you could order a Wal and wait 3 years.... and we didn't have massive shortages in the supply chain and strongly high demand ... A few months ago many things sold for a lot less than they do now.. The most recent Wal's are selling for north of $10K and there is one for sale now for close to $12K..
But hey, if someone has years to wait for a great deal, by all means wait..
