Help me find a new bass!

Hey guys!

So it's Christmas and I'm looking for a new bass to replace my 4 string Archer K Sulton series bass.

My reasons are I want to get a 5 string and I also want to get a better quality bass.

I'm looking to spend between $1000-$1500 on a bass and am looking for suggestions.

My thoughts so far are Dingwalls combustion bass everything I heard about it are good so far.

I've also been looking at a American fender jazz bass.

If you guys know any other basses I should consider let me know and if you can comment on which one out of these two is better I would appreciate.

Cheers,
Josh

I'd agree with the used idea. You'll definitely get a lot of bass for $1500 bucks in the used market.

My personal suggestions would be to look into the 2010 American Deluxe Fender Jazzes or Lakland Skyline basses.

Lakland makes a really solid 5 string, and I prefer the to Fenders, but the new Deluxes look pretty nice. I've heard good things about them, I'm sure you couldn't go wrong either way.

The Dingwall's are supposed to be nice as well, I'd definitely look into them.

What kind of music are you looking to play?

There are so many nice basses in your price range, it could make a person's head explode. Dingwall Combustion is not a bad choice, but neither is a Fender Am. Std. Jazz. It all depends on what tone/style you want. You will need a way to narrow down the possibilities, especially if you go used.

If you can afford it, why not? I had the money in march of '09 that I could finally afford the MIA Jazz bass I always wanted. The only reason I limited myself to $1200 to purchase a bass was because that's what the Jazz happened to cost. Surely you can get a good bass for a lot less, I myself also have two Squiers and an SX which I am very happy with. If I had to, I could do with just those, but like I said, if you can afford a more expensive bass, you should go for it. I did.

Definitely buy used.

If you're into the Fender stuff (which I'm not, but many rave about their overall good "vintagey" tone) I believe a P/J pickup config. would be a good choice since you want something versatile.

I'd go with a used Deluxe Precision if you can find one. G&L also gets a lot of praise for their versatility.

The best option is still to go try out as many basses as you can, find one that you like, then come back home and start hunting for a used one.

I'd go with an AVS or Am.Dlx Fender J or P for a great all around bass (AVS for vintage flavour, Am.Dlx for the modern active vibe).

I'd also consider a 2 band Classic Stingray, I can personally get 90% of the sounds I'll ever need live from the simple bass/treble layout of a 2 band Ray and varying right hand technique.
