Help me pick a color, please!

I have 2 bound-front okoume Chromasonic V bodies that I will be building out on spec with 32" scale conversion necks. It's likely these will be the last fivers I build for a good while, so I'd like them to be memorable.

One will be 3-tone sunburst (3TS) like the Chromasonic VI shown below. The second will be another 3TS, black-cherry sunburst (BCS) like the LP, or another color that's yet to be determined.

What are your thoughts?

I personally don’t like the black cherry burst. If it is a bound body, I’d consider making it a gold top - with black back and sides, of course.

I’m also a little skeptical of a 32” fiver, but have to admit I have played one the was just fine. I know it is possible, but question how consistently it can be pulled off. B strings are difficult to accommodate, IMO. Having said that, I’ve long admired your designs.

Gold top would be very nice, but I've done it before and I want to try something new. On 32" scale, it's definitely not for everybody, but I've proven it works with my neck and body designs, so I'm putting it out there for others to enjoy.

If you are thinking black cherry, it's hard to beat black cherry moving to amber in the center. One of my all-time favorites for sure and for certain:

To me, the quality of a sunburst is all about the smoothness of the gradient. Not the color itself nor the number of colors involved.

Both the examples shown by the OP are drastically different from one another in gradient alone and neither hold a candle to the beauty of the one BassHappy posted.

I’m also a big fan of Champagne Sparkle. I keep thinking about working with Nutter Guitars (an old friend) on an Astro bass, and if I ever do, that’s the finish I’ll go with. The Astro is reminiscent of your designs, by the way.

Go with your strengths. Figured wood under a blueburst finish, or any bloody burst, done well, should hit the mark. Translucent bodies, no burst, also do well. Anything done well does well, especially when you're going with the flow, the law of averages.

As sunbursts go I’ve always been partial to tobacco sunburst.

That said, I’m not generally a sunburst guy. Binding? Lake Placid Blue!
