I notice some of the pics have the bass with the pickup covers and some don't. Does he play with those? I assume he also ditched the factory string mutes?

Yellow silks=Rotos.

They look pretty new.

They look like Rotosounds to me, because of the gold silks, and the way they taper towards the ball ends, but, I think LaBella might have the gold silks too.

La Bella's are purple.

he ditched the mutes years ago,but played with a chunk of sponge under there instead

My eyesight isn't great but i was very convinced it did indeed say Squier on the headstock. And this was the only bass he played that night.

EDIT: Yep, it seems like it was a Squier. This is the best shot i can find (its heavily cropped but you can make out the logo).

Yeah I see the squier logo , also it looks like it has the smaller tuners and a single ply pickguard like a squier affinity.No biggie if its set up good, nice strings , good amp and a great player its going to sound good.

I have that Curtis Novak webpage in my bookmarks, and I visit it often.
It make me feel better every time. That's one of the most wonderful bass I have ever seen, with a interesting history and Herbie is a great bass players.

Interesting...I started a thread just yesterday about how surprised I am none of these builders on this site (or anywhere for that matter) haven't tried to reproduce the Herbie Flowers Jazz...

I think it's the mother of all relic Jazz basses

Herbie was on 'The One Show' recently with the blue jazz and the black 88s had gone. It looked to me like he has now got Labellas on it - the real heavy gauge.

just out of curiosity, is that jazz bass (the blue one) the one he used on the space oddity recording? i always thought it sounded like a fretless bass being played on there.
