High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

I finally broke down and ordered a HPF from Broughton. All the yakking going on about how they improve, I figured I needed to get something new, what the heck. We don't play that loud anyway, but we'll see. Now I gotta find a spot on my pedalboard. I hear you can mount it underneath. It's an always on type.

I grabbed one a little while ago and it's been great! Especially for recording. For setting it, just set is as low a possible and slowly turn the frequency up until you can hear some low end going away, then just back it off a bit. I varies from bass, heads, cabs, effects, etc. It's one of those "You won't know it's doing anything until you remove it from your chain" kind of things.

I got to play around with the Broughton HPF a little today. Of course, I grabbed my Dingwall AB1-5 and plugged it into my Reeves C225 and 2 x 115 cabs. Both channels> Bass=2oc, Mid=11oc, Treb+2oc. These 15" Reeves cabinets are efficient & AMAZING and can dish it out! So when the HPF knob is all the way up- clockwise,it is at it's lowest freq point. I got the always on, so I had to plug/unplug to A/B it. I really didn't notice it till about 2 (out of 10). Then I plugged my 20,30,40,50 tone file through my ipod and noticed that at the lowest (most off), the 20hz came through a little and the 30hz came through strong. So I dialed it up until the 30 came through, but with a less excursion on the speaker. This was around the same 2 out of 10. I plugged my bass in again and fiddled with it back and forth pretty much between these 2 points, not higher. It seems to make the notes way down B,C,C+,D -clearer without losing the low end punch. Then I plugged my Fender 4 in and played with that. Then I unplugged 1 speaker (I'll only gig with 1-15) and I think I noticed it more than both cabs combined. Of course, no band gigs :( -so I'm hanging home with it. So far, my first impression is that it makes some notes more defined.

Great detail on that. I use mine almost all the time. It really tightens up the punch.

I'm thinking about mounting it under the pedaltrain board cause there's no more real estate on top. Hoping the knob won't move.

I don't really feel like an LPF is ever really necessary, but as a sound engineer, HPFs are absolutely essential for getting rid of boomy resonances in bad rooms. I automatically engage HPFs on every channel I can. 80 Hz for guitars and vox, 40 Hz for bass and kick, to start, and I might move them up from there, if necessary.

I've never bothered adding an HPF to my bass pedalboard, but that's because up until the past few years, I didn't *have* a bass pedalboard. My bass pedalboard was a Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner, and that was it. I'm probably going to add a Broughton HPF to my rig before long, just so that I can be sure the problem isn't my bass/rig.

I posted this in the Broughton thread as a lot of the gear currently on my board is Broughton, however this may be a more appropriate thread for this.

Without cross-threading too much, I m looking to leverage my preamps and HPF/LPFs to get a good Dub sound. Details in the link below. It's for an audition with a quasi-Reggae Rock band, from what I know of it.

Broughton Audio Super Thread

Very open for input.

 I also just might take off the knob and cross my fingers I don't forget it if things sound funny.........

You can also use a loc-knob on it, they work great and it still has the ability to change it at will.
Just a thought of a old bassist!!

Yep what he said!! Loc-knobs work great. You can also go to your local hardware store and grab a $.25 o-ring that will fit under the knob and keep it set where you turn it.
