High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

I'm not actually familiar with the laws around that, is there legal prohibitions from doing so? Or was that meant as more of a moral point?

The de facto standards are detailed on the Creative Commons website. These range over tiers from free-for-all to fair usage for educational purposes only, but proper attribution to the original designer is a constant AFAIK.

Ohhhhhhh, I didn’t realize the fdeck was a Creative Commons things. Honestly I still mostly think of that license in conjunction with podcasts as that’s where I always hear it referenced.

I'm not sure if it is, I was just commenting on the most well known iterations of "open source" projects. My experiences with CC mostly involve graphics and/or CAD software or DIY music electronics widgets, FWIW. In my case I have the PCBs for my OS onboard preamp tagged right on the board as CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. That translates to noncommercial, ShareAlike (sic). So if you mod it and resditribute the schematic you are obligated to share the IP in like fashion and to attribute the original design to me with a proper reference. If you then want to sell either my or your version as hardware and I agree we can port that branch to a different OS licence, like the way Linux has for instance.

Maybe we shouild ping @fdeck for his take on this. I've asked him about it directly privately but I don't want to put words in his mouth.
 
Charlie, thanks. The simple answer is that the design info at my web page doesn't actually have any protection beyond the common law copyright that everything has by default. When I started selling widgets -- even before HPF-Pre -- concepts of open source hardware were still in their infancy, and I didn't think much about it. My assumption at the time was that the only protection "with teeth" was a patent, which would have been prohibitively expensive and hard to enforce. And you never even know if your idea is patent-able until you spend a lot of money to find out that it isn't. There's an article out there, "the case against patents" that lays out the problems with the patent system for small-time businesses.

I've had a handful of people reach out to me about building their own HPF, and it's fun to see what folks are cooking up out there. I love the DIY community. There are some published DIY layouts.

My thought about protecting my design is that a good engineer or advanced DIY'er could come up with their own design fairly readily. So my inclination has always been to just not worry about it.

Mesa Boogie WD-800 for a surprising reason, the high pass filter. This is the first amp that I have that I can get the tone that I want without hearing about it later.

I live with my parents and, as much as they don’t mind music playing, they don’t like the living room floor vibrating.

I can get wonderful tube distortion and not even hear it upstairs (I tested it with my line 6).

Same here, it has heft all through the volume sweep. Can play “quiet” and still sounds beefy

One more thing: I would highly recommend using a HPF if you don't already. Take a look at the excursion plots. Notice how the speaker goes into over-excursion below the port-tuning--that goes for either tuning. A HPF will help prevent that, which in turn will allow you to push the driver closer to it's 400W thermal limit. Even if you use a lower power amp, it'll help you get the most out of it's power by not wasting energy on the lowest, most problematic frequencies.

Edit: I just checked the port length calculated by fdeck's Java program, and based on the port dimensions OP posted on page 2 (7.5"x2.5", 13" long, *2 ports), I got that the current dimensions give a tuning of ~56hz with the 3012HO, which also happens to give a very nice FR. Maybe someone should double check my numbers?

From what I've read, @fdeck only ships to USA. I seem to remember one TBr who volunteers to be a middleman.

Hey guys, crazy idea? Is there any danger/advantage running my HPF pre-series 3 at 12v?

In other news, I recently figured out how to do some frequency sweeps with my audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 - nothing spectacular) and the program Room EQ Wizard. I tried this with a couple of preamps and with the HPF3. So far, I am mainly looking at SPL vs. frequency, though the program measures myriad other things (like phase relationships and distortion) that I haven't really gotten into. (To be clear, I'm not measuring anything acoustically -- signal is generated from the program and looped from the interface, through the device being measured, and back into the interface.)

I learned that it's easy to make errors that can skew your results (like using inappropriate signal levels or not disengaging the direct-monitor function on the interface, which can feed-back through the device you're scoping and give you skewed results and weird resonances -- which, since you're not monitoring, you don't hear). I'll come back and elaborate (here or elsewhere) on my methodology (not that there's much to it) at some point -- the last thing I want to do is misrepresent someone's work and, if I'm making a mistake somewhere, I want to know.

Meanwhile, though, after several trial runs, checking my results, and running them by @fdeck before posting here, I think that I've got things reasonably sorted.

I measured the response of my interface beforehand and used that as a calibration file in REW.

At any rate, this is the measured response of my HPF3. The title indicates that the numeric SPL levels given are at 35 Hz (the HPF3's minimum adjustment) but they are actually at 34.9 Hz -- couldn't get the cursor exactly on 35 Hz. It was exactly -3 dB there, though, and the -3 dB at max was exactly at 140 Hz (top of the adjustment range), too. Impressive correlation (at least to me) with the nominal specs.

I ran the sweep from 2 Hz to 21 KHz (my interface tops out around 22 KHz), using the response at 1 KHz as my "0 dB" reference. I've zoomed-in on the are of interest for an HPF, but the response from 1 KHz on up is pretty much ruler flat.

I know that we've seen several visualizations of what an HPF is supposed to do, but I thought you might all be interested in an actual, measured response. (There is no smoothing applied to the graphs, btw -- this is how they came out.)
