High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

In search for a perfect HPF for myself, I made a list of preamps/DIs which include the HPF function. Let me share it with you. I am leaving dedicated HPFs (FDeck, Broughton, Vong, Thumpinator) aside.

Variable HPF:
  • Radial AC-Driver
  • Radial PZ-DI
  • Fishman Platinum Stage Pro
  • Broughton Messenger
  • Mesa Rosette
  • Mesa Subway Plus preamp
  • Grace Felix/Alix
  • Acoustic Image Flex
Switchable HPF:
  • Fishman Platinum Stage
  • Tech 21 Q strip
  • Radial Tonebone PZ-Deluxe
  • Radial Tonebone PZ Pre
  • Radial Bassbonbe V2
  • Radial Bassbone OD
I hope somebody finds it helpful. I am sure I didn't find all that exist out there.

Question for owners of the Broughton high/low pass pedals: With the effect engaged, does the pedal act as a signal buffer? My presumption is yes based on the input and output impedance specs, along with being an active circuit, but I was curious if anyone had a definitive answer. Thanks!

Yes it does. Any active circuit is a buffer.

Very helpful. Thank you.

So I just now ordered the always on HPF from Broughton. I am intending to use it with my Marshall VBA400 and Berg NV610. My goal is to clean up the bottom end of my sound in some of boomier stages we play.
Anyone care to comment on what I should expect and potentially any suggestion re setting? Also, where in my signal chain should I put the HPF? Currently, my pedal board has a Peterson Strobo Tuner and a Tech 21 VT pedal.
Thanks in advance for you interest...

I put mine right before the input on my amp and set around 50 - 60 hz. You may need to tweak it for personal taste or for different situations.

You will likely notice a big difference. I have basses I have a hard time playing without my HPF. A real game changer in my and of course @Stumbo 's opinion. :)

Try it before and after the VT. Also try it in the effects loop of the VBA400.

Adjust to taste.

mid booster just because it's somewhat valid to this tread.. www.vfepedals.com/standout.html

I have a custom passive band filter.. Top end 5khz or 2khz and 30hz on the bottom. I've had that since 2008.. A guy in Paris made it for me
Interesting unit.

maybe this can solve

Interesting idea, but from what I can see, it only works with Xotic basses and no mention of it working on others. I would contact the company and ask about that before you buy one.

The best way to eliminate single-coil hum is split-coil pickups. Framing and Zexcoil both make excellent split-coil Jazz pickups.
You can also do stacked coils. Both of those types typically have less high end than single coils, which may not be acceptable. Certainly is acceptable to me, though...I hate single coil hum. And yet I have a couple basses and guitars with single coils and I love them despite the potential for noise pickup...I'm a walking contradiction :D
