LOL! Klaus Nomi! My first experience hearing a countertenor, or so he claimed. I honestly think he might have been a real castrato ;)

Sopeaking of which, I downloaded an album a couple years ago called "The Last Castrato," the only known recordings of a castrato, done in the early 1900's by Alessandro Moreschi, who was the last of the castrati in Europe. He was not an especially great singer, but he led the Sistine Chapel choir back then and recorded a bunch of hymns. A more otherworldly voice you never heard. It's not quite male and it's not quite female...it's downright scary! Highly recommended! *****

There's an example of his voice on his wikipedia page... eerie stuff.

That's what popped into my mind too, the line from Cygnus X-1, "Like a spiral sea UNENDING........" bit. :) It's never a bad time to point out what an amazing band Rush is.

I've heard numerous times that Mariah AND Minnie were in those ranges, read an article about David Gilmour many years ago telling of an artist he was working with, then a young Kate Bush, who could do 6 octaves at 17 years old. Patti I've seen live and trust me she is there. I forgot to mention Angela Winbush whom I've heard can hit five. There are gospel singers that have been widely overlooked that can do up to these ranges also.

Dang, you really got my hopes up! But he exhibits no signs of being a real eunuch in pics I've seen.

I have a standing offer out there for any castrato to contact me and I will make him a star the likes of which have never been seen. Matt Bellamy doesn't qualify. Plus, I guess you say he's already a star ;)

I had heard eunuchs had no facial hair at all. He clearly has a little, though it's not much. But also, eunuchs are generally taller, have an inflated-looking chest, and are more wide in the hips than he is.

He sure is a pasty looking dude, though. He clearly doesn't have the testosterone levels of you and I ;)
