HIGHSCHOOL WOODSHOP BUILD #2

Sorry about the delay for some readon i couldnt sign on to talkbass for a week er two but i guess it works now so updates you shall have
that would be amazing but i just dont know how to get started. i with there were some local guys around here that i could work for but there really isnt as far as i know

well i put the last coat on the front. it isnt polished yet but i have pics finally
thanks i think so too i cant wait to whip it out in jazzband
i love basses that look organic. the new traben basses with the huge metal bridges make me sick huge chrome flames are for cars not musical instruments
I am not all that great at finishing. its very frustrating for me at least. but now i have 5 coats on each side i have not polished it yet but that will be soon. also i have made a 3rd and final pup cover. i like this one the best. its a koa cover with some veneer on it. i have a box of veneer i got from my dads friend from work but i have no idea of the species.
of coarse the poores will never fill on the wenge but i like it anyways
also i did not feel like buying a fret beveling file so i decided to make one. i tok a triangle file and took it on the surface grinder and now i have aflat side to go against the fretboard and 2 beveling edges. hopefully these pictures will show what im talkin about.

Nothing clever to add, but every time I check this thread I'm drooling over this bass. If you're really interested in doing this professionally, you should set up a website. You have already had something like 20,000 views to your thread and lots of interest.
I normally wouldn't encourage someone to enter the custom bass market because it seems to be rather saturated as it is, but you really have a unique style to offer, which very few builders do IMO. It's cool to see something that's not a Fender or Carl Thompson knockoff (I should note here that my personal bass is largely Rickenbacker and CT inspired, visually, so no knock to instruments like that). I wish you tons of luck - really hoping to see your website soon.

I have a friend that might be able to help me out with a website but the only other problem is i dont really have the capacity to do more than 1 maybe 2 basses at a time currently. i think maybe my senior year i will start a website because the one thing i need more practice on is fretting before i take anyones money and try and turn it into a custom made bass. plus i will be taking all easy classes so i should have more time to be in the shop.

What's the deal with the fretboard, BTW? I've never seen padouk that looked like that, the color contrast is really nice.
well the padouk was reaaaaaalllly old i actually thought it was black walnut when the guy i buy from handed it to me it was very oxidised. but when i cut it up it was very blood red the padouk fretboard binding is cut from the same peice that the stripes in the body are from. but i dont know if i will be using padouk again on my next build cause its soo oily and bleeds colors it was not accepting the tung oil very well at all.

indeed i will make a woodcraft run in the near future and try some of this. i might have some but i dont know if it is bloodwood er not. i made a nut out of said material and there are photos below.
yours will turn out great i have no doubt. i just want to see some more photos.

ha yea i get ya. well HIGHSCHOOL WOODSHOP BUILD 3 is not far around the corner and the MITES competition is this weekend and next weekend. so ideas for new build will be snowballing quite soon cuse this build is almost over. im so far thinkin electric upright bass but it is all up in the air.
OK Many photos this time. as i mentioned MITES is this weekend so i have till friday morning to be done. frantic rushing and progress posts will be coming in the next couple days. My apologize for the dark photos my basement has a lack of light
i have the nut and trussrod cover done. but i still have to slot the nut. i am quite satisfied with the way these turned out
bridge=done exept slotting its quite a cool piece i like the way it turned out. slots still need to be cut. sorry for bad pictures, i took alot to try and show what it looks like. its padouke bacote and marblewood
and the string retainer that put me through sleepless nights. its aluminium. i made a groove on the back to hide the strinf ferrules. i was going to mke a woodent one but i dont have enough room on account of a simple and stupid measuring mistake i made. (my dad wanted to be featured on this build)
the design is based of of an uprights endpin..... here is my endpin that the braided cord will wrap around and hold the tention. Hopefully this all makes sense.
And lastly my control cover has finish on it and was polished and the holes were drilled for screws.

Just dont rush the end of it, and have something go wrong. That bass is far to beautiful to have that happen.

ohhhhh man i laughed quite a bit at that one. my father will get a kick out of that.
after hours of tweaking and such i finnaly got it dtringed up to tention.its out of intonation but that can be fixed later it just has to look perrrty on friday. but i ended up going without the braided cord and coat hanger wire instead it worked alot better. the braided wire was tooo resiliant so when i would tighten one string the rest would down tune. it was almost the equivilant of a floyd rose. i still think the aluminium string retainer is ugly but i dont really have a choice right now. ill make something up later.
it sounds good and it plays pretty well as fat as upper fret ease but the action needs a ton of adjustment and the pickup needs to be moved up closer to the strings but as i said it just needs to look perrrty right now i can do these things later. there will be a dissasembly and re assembly tommorrow night for polishing and blue tape removal.
