Exactly- it's like watching Scarface and a couple other gangster movies, then deeming that all movies suck because they all promote drugs and cop killing. It's not the movies that are the problem- the problem is the listener who decided to judge an entire medium based on only the small portion of it they have listened to.

I play guitar in a Hip Hop/Rock group called Krunkquistadors. ( :D ) It's fun, stupid party music. But we don't claim to be anything else, either.

Link Removed ...the songs on there currently are guitar-less, as they are from the last album. The new album will be far more rockin'.

I don't think "I shot the sheriff" actually promotes shooting police. Just like much of the Rap lyrics (rap with actual lyrics that is) does not promote violence, but tells the story about something.

Mr. Tyler mentioned Marley's shooting cops lyrics as some sort of justification for todays rap lyrics. Take it up with him ;) Honestly, I have no interest in Marley OR rap music.

My main gripe with rap music is........Any music that glorifies the thug lifestyle does our culture and youth no good at all.

That is found in EVERY genre though- hell, West Side Story has numbers that do that. You don't dismiss the genre based on the lyrics some performers of that genre choose to use.

You're missing the point. Unfortunately, topics of drugs, violence, misogyny, etc. are most common with mainstream rap artists. That said, the fact is there are just as many if not more rap artists who don't condone the "thug lyfe" as there are who do, and to define an entire genre by one group is closed minded to say the least.



Give that a listen. You don't have to like it, but it may open up your mind a bit.

I've come to like a lot of hip-hop. I don't dig the gangster/thug crap but I can really get into stuff like Outkast, Black Eyed Peas, Q-Tip and the like. I used to write off all hip-hop as gangster-crack-smoking-f-the-cops sort of BS but there's a lot more to it than that.

A Fresh Prince album was actually my first rap album- I got it when I was 9. I've spent the next 22 years after that buying albums that contradict your ideas. There's thousands out there. There wasn't anything even remotely "gangsta" in rap for the first decade+ it was around. Be honest- how much research have you done on the subject outside of hearing what on the radio or playing out of people's cars?

What I hear playing out of peoples cars is reason enough to hate the entire genre ;)
