Hip-Hop likeres?

It just never fails, does it? Start a thread on rap or hip-hop in general and suddenly things blow up. What a lot of people doing the negative posting probably don't understand is that there is likely more debate within the hip-hop community regarding the negative aspects of the culture than there is between hip-hoppers and non hip-hoppers. Anyone who knows and understands the history of hip-hop is well aware that most commercial hip-hop today is anathema to the original spirit of hip-hop. Disco had the same problem, in terms of people condemning an entire style or genre because of what became most visible to the public (but that's another story). If you don't like the hip-hop you hear on commercial radio, don't blame the hip-hop community. Instead, blame a music industry run by corporations that couldn't care less about actual music - a music industry that favours formula over creativity and is only interested in unit sales. Education before condemnation, please.

yeah, i wonder how these people would react if we started judging rock n' roll based off of our opinions of Three Days Grace and Puddle of Mudd, or judged jazz based off of our opinions of Kenny G.

I'd definitely call 'em underground, at least compared to Lil Wayne and 50 cent and whoever else. Totally dig Living Legends and Murs, I'll have to check out the others.

I suppose, maybe they don't see underground due to fact that i live in this area.

Mr. Tyler mentioned Marley's shooting cops lyrics as some sort of justification for todays rap lyrics. Take it up with him Honestly, I have no interest in Marley OR rap music.

My main gripe with rap music is........Any music that glorifies the thug lifestyle does our culture and youth no good at all.

mr tylers point was that just because one artist, or one song is about something, doesn't mean whole genre is about it. If you don't like the style is one thing, to disrespect artists work based on you disliking of different artist just because he is in sae genre is weak.

No dude, ok, at least for me, i am not against counter point, but way it's presented. I feel really bad because it sounds to me that you are shutting down a lot of good music and great lyrics based on what you hear on radio. If you notice, there is not a lot of good music in main stream period. I honestly think that if you listen to few hip-hop artist i listen to and some that have been posted here, you would, in fact like it.

I wasn't very much of a hip hop fan till I heard The Roots way back when and started getting into Tupac, JayZ, and now all the more underground local bay area stuff I've been digging. The Roots are one of my favorite bands now too.

That's the new CD they are releasing, right?

I don't know how the new CD will be, but damn, that song is good!

It's all brilliant; ICP, Twiztid, Dark Lotus, etc.

To anybody who's a rap fan, you owe it to yourself to at least give these guys a try. Dark Lotus is one of the most talented rap groups I've ever heard, bar none.

I'm not a huge fan of the genre but occasionally I hear something I like.

I like some Dizzee Rascal, especially that 'Bonkers' song he did with Armand Van Helden. It's got this really amazing, dirty, distorted synth bass line in there.

I agree with Tommygun's statement about listening to stuff that represents or speaks to me. Just like rock, funk, jazz etc there are all types of people expressing themselves. Others are just doing it for money. I personally like lyrics with some depth and music that is CREATIVE!

Raised on hip-hop, produce hip-hop and play hip-hop! Yes, I was a sampler. I could chop your stuff up like the Bomb Squad. But, with me sampling, I learned to appreciate the originals. I already knew my Black Music History, but learned about White artists too. Blood, Sweat & Tears, Steely Dan and Toto are just a few. So now I have a wide variety of bass players to admire and pull from when playing.
