I call it the P Bass of Dirt: Does not sound like much in your bedroom, but kills in a band setting.

In terms of "orangey", my meatsmoke OD channel handles that pretty delightfully and can get downright raunchy without adding anything - if I hit one of my current dirts, it heads towards sonic destruction. So my primary goal here is that mid-gain area to push the SVTish "clean" channel a bit.

I keep seeing the Rat clones pop up from a majority of folks! What is it about these that you all love so much. Full disclosure - that seems to be the way I'm heading.

I have the same exact dirt pedals than the OP. First I use an always on Barbershop. It is my magic weapons to add some harmonics to fuller the tone. As for OD, I use either BS/SS Mini or Fifth Gear depending if I play the Fender or Ric. On the fuzz side, I have a TFR and BS/SS TAFM. I have done a/b with a few other pedals before ending with it. However, all of them are going through a Wounded Paw Blender to keep the low end. This last is maybe the missing piece for the OP. I would say that Wren&Cuff and BS/SS are making outstanding dirt pedals. IMHO.

YO! These pedals ARE great. I thought they exactly hit the spot with my Terrorbass 1000, but since I swapped over to the Meatsmoke, their use and character are a bit different, causing me to re-evaluate my options.

My favorite mix was an mxr M80 clean and punchy with a bunch of angry and a little driver. Split with an LS-2.

OK I should maybe mention I have a Aguilar Tonehammer Pre at the end of my chain and my pref for that style pedal (like the Sansamps/darkglass etc) is def this. As of now, I'm using it primarily as light color (gain below 9pm) / strong EQ. I was using it as my DI too, but the Jensen in my MS does a better job and keeps the tube warmth.

I've already been keying in on a few things that a bunch of you have already hit on.

I really appreciate all the feedback, and mainly I just love reading about what other people love and do, regardless of if it's applicable to my own thing.

I keep coming back to my Vintage MicroTubes and Duality pedals for my boards. Most of the Darkglass stuff doesn't do it for me but those two just work IMO.

I really enjoyed the Messdrive Hybrid+ when I was still using dirt pedals regularly. Very versatile. Can do both warm/vintage and modern/aggressive

Also, as far as fuzzes go, TeamAwesome Fuzz Machine. Light overdrive: Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop.

Wow! The 66 is incredibly transparent in a way that I haven't heard before... that seems like a great tool to have in the arsenal.

My two favorites are my Malekko Diabolik and EHX Green Russian Reissue.

If you want a huge pillow of warm fuzz for the band to float on top of then I don't know if you can do much better than the Green Russian.

The Diabolik I love because it sounds so great with my band as a fuzzy midrange boost. I use mine super conservatively and I like it as an overdrive more than most dedicated overdrive pedals.

TL/DR: Tell me your fav dirt pedals for bass with a brief why. I'm considering swapping out one or both of my current ones.

What I got:
I have a Wren & Cuff Tall Font Russian (sovtek, pre-civil war green muff clone) and a Smallsound/Bigsound Frik Mini (jfet overdrive)

Why change these?
These pedals are great, but neither are quite hitting the sweet spots I'm looking for from.

• The TFR is maybe too gritty, angular for what I'm thinking - I'm looking for a big buttery, saturated fuzz I think.
  
• The SSBS mini handles low freq well, but maybe is just a tad more fuzzy than I want - my straight dirt is tricky because I'd like it to keep the lows pushing through, while sparking up the mids a bit.

What am I doing?
Thing is my amp (Verellen Meatsmoke) has a great orange-ish overdriven channel all on it's own, so I'm looking for specific variations to hit the "clean" (70s SVT style) channel with. I don't want to override the character too much, but also want to get some solid grit as describe above on demand.

What you got?

I hardly ever use distortion, but if I do, I use my old orange BOSS DS-1. It has a crazy, wild growl to it.

I won one from sweet water but sold it pretty quick. I should have kept it around. I haven't come across anything that sounds close to the fat rat. I'm using a GT1000CORE for a lot and put my DG pedals in the fx loops to place where I want them. The core has one rat and fuzz pedals but the fat rat was jUst... FAT

Not exactly, and got to admit I am not all to familiar with newer sub-genres of music either.

Does sound like something I quite possibly might like and should look into though.

In lack of a better genre definition I do progressive psychedelic stoner/doom rock in a bass/vocals and drums/vocals duo, but I suppose some of the parts could perhaps fit into the blackgaze style and that some parts in fact are rather droney of nature, others though sounds closer to traditional stoner rock, while others again shares more similarities with progressive and math rock.

Now I realize that might sound like a very confused and incoherent mix, but I actually believe it will all come together perfectly nicely in the right context.

Hard to tell though for certain yet, as I have only just started rehearsing with an old drummer friend of mine that I played in a hard progressive rock band with years back, based on little over a handful of songs I have been working for on bass for quite some time now, which is what my current setup has been assembled for and I'd like to think is nearing close to perfection for.

And yes, Rats is definitely where it's at, though I guess it is somewhat of an acquired taste, but a very popular one at that.

I suppose you could call it the perfect distortion pedal for people who love fuzz.
