Kevin does all the instruments on the recordings and then hires a band to play live. He main instrument is actually drums, but he plays guitar live usually. Anyway, it is Kevin in the picture.

Hofner-(not just Beatle Basses)-Group Part 2

It’s been a while since watching it, but in the studio scenes of The Harder They Come I believe the guitarist is playing a solid body Hofner guitar.
Yep, backing Toots and the Maytals. I think it's Hux Brown; bass is Jackie Jackson.
Those Hofner guitars - models 173 and 176 - were just as iconic in Jamaica as the violin bass at one time. Besides Hux Brown, they were played by Alva Lewis of the Upsetters (you can see him in the B&W photo I posted earlier), Lynn Taitt, and Barry Collins (Tomorrow's Children). Andy Cox of The Beat played one in the 80s, and Aaron Porter of Minnesota's The Prizefighters is currently playing one on all their material and gigs.
Do you recognize the bass? Looks Fender-ish but not clear.

The more Hofner basses, the better.
Has anyone used the Hofner roundwounds? not the cheap contemporary rounds, the more expensive Hofner rounds

I have them on my Ignition. Love them. Great deep sound. The E is somewhat dead but I think that may be the bridge. It has cleared up a little over time, and also it’s not noticeable when rehearsing with a band. The sound of it has kind of grown on me, as well.
Thanks, im considering giving them a try, the only thing that is holding me back is the lack of tension information (none available for these as far as I know) as Hofners dont like anything even approachign high tension, I have a cut down set of Rotosound long scale 95-40 rounds on the Hofner at the moment but would be good to have a dedicated Hofner set on the bass

Band is The Cavaliers, bassist is Lloyd Spence, Lynn Taitt on guitar. Several other members went on to form the Skatalites!

Inoperable, but I still have it. Worked a summer job in 1978 to get it. It was $150.00. To a 15 year old, a fortune.

that's a cool bass. you should get it working again.
I'll bet a lot of us have a similar story. Mine was a Raven copy of a Jazz bass, $150, bought with summer job (pizza chef) money when I was 15.
