def. not the pickguard, I use my bass without it. So the pickups shouldn't make any noise at all while unplugged and playing? it's quite subtle really, not exactly annoying and it doesn't really affect the sound when amplified... I'm just sort of curious haha if you know what I mean, since it's a recent acquisition. Plus I already had it checked buy a trusted tech and he found nothing at all.

my first guess is that something may have come loose. what exactly it is, I don't know. But, you may wanna have that same tech or anyone else qualified to take a look under the hood.

btw, your Hof looks a lot like my first one, which is a late 70s, too. I replaced the black knobs with teacups a bit over 20 years back, but still have the original knobs.

but, here's a link to another forum that deals exclusively with Hofner. someone over there might be able to help you, too.

hey thanks for the advice, I'll be ckecking out those forums then.

Problem is that as I said, I already took it to a renown tech in my area who found no problem at all. The pickups are firmly screwed to the body.

I just now had a vision of what it might be:

It might be the wires from the pickups might be a bit loose, so, when being played, they rattle a bit.

the pickup wires came loose on a buddy's guitar recently and they make a rattling type noise when being played, too. So, if that's the case, that's easily remedied.

I'm almost sure that's the problem now.

I found this on Craig's List, for a little over a hundred bucks. It was un-playable when I bought it. It actually had a regular guitar string on it, (among the three strings that were on it). It had been stored in a hot attic for years with too much tension on it. The neck was curved like a banana, and I thought it may end up as a wall hanger. I put it away unstrung for about six months, and when I decided to check it out, the neck had returned to being straight. I put some strings on it, and found that the action was insanely high. When the bridge was bottomed out, and the strings were almost touching the pickup, it was still bad. I made a spacer to put under the neck, and now it plays just fine. I was very surprised at how much signal comes out of the pickup. The back of the neck is highly figured maple, and the thing is in remarkable condition for its age. It has very small frets, like a guitar. A very unique instrument.

I liked mine a lot, but.....I had that Hofner 500/1 in my head. I order a new one in spring of '66. I think it took a month but came in for $435, brand new in a hard shell case. That was it till I found a new Danelectro Long Horn in '68. The Long Horn was $150 in '68. I had that along with others till '03.

Yes, I own both and have extensively played both. So if you have any more icon/CT questions feel free to ask me.
After running my icon into the ground, I upgraded to a CT.
The CT has the sound block, icon does not
Personally I find the icon to have more punch. It "booms" more.

here's mine...

It's a 1968. I bought it new, and I added fender tuners back in 1970, when it was a heavily working bass.

It's marked "West Germany on the back of the machine head.

I also have an Icon as well as the CT model (and a 70s German version). The CT is slightly heavier than the Icon/Ignition model, due to the center block. On my CT, it's also slightly neck heavy..not much, but just a little. All later models of the CT weren't as neck heavy for some reason - I have one of the prototypes made.
